No. 24 Oregon Softball Goes 3-0 On First Day of National Invitational Tournament

SUNNYVALE, Calif. - The University of Oregon softball team (19-13), ranked No. 24 in the USA Today NFCA Softball poll, went 3-0 on the first day of the National Invitational Tournament in Sunnyvalle, Calf. The Ducks opened the day with a 3-2 win over Virginia Tech and followed with an 8-2 victory over Miami University and a 7-3 victory over Long Beach State
Sophomore Lisa Wangler picked up the win in Game 1 and junior Connie McMurren got Oregon's first save of the season. Sophomore Andrea Vidlund improved to 7-3 on the year with the win over the Redhawks and McMurren (7-5) picked up the 7-3 win over Long Beach State.
'We came out much more prepared and realized that this is our last preseason tournament,' Oregon head coach Rick Gamez said.'We know where we are and where we want to be and they did a good job of coming together as a team.'
In Game 1 Oregon took 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning. Senior Triawn Custer singled to third base and Missy Coe's double in Oregon's next at-bat put both in scoring position. A wild pitch by Virginia Tech pitcher Ashlee Dobbe scored Custer to give the Ducks the early lead.
Oregon scored two more runs in the bottom of the fifth inning, but Virginia Tech rallied in the top of the sixth, scoring two runs to pull within a run, 3-2. The Hokies were unable to score in the seventh and Oregon improved to 1-0 on the day.
Against Miami University, the Ducks dominated, scoring in all but two innings to get the 8-2 victory. Wangler led Oregon offensively, going 3-for-4 with two runs scored and two runs batted in. Sophomore Alyssa Laux was 2-for-3 with two runs scored.
Oregon improved to 2-0 against Long Beach State this season, handing the 49ers a 7-2 loss in Game 3. Oregon scored two runs in the top of the third inning, but both teams remained scoreless over the next three innings. In the top of the seventh the Ducks rallied to score five runs, while Long Beach State managed just two in the bottom of the seventh.
