FRESNO, CA - The top-ranked UCLA softball team improved to 30-0 on the season with a 9-1 win over Cal Poly on Friday morning at the Hedrick's Hallowell Chevrolet Classic in Fresno, CA. Keira Goerl earned the six-inning win to improve to 10-0 on the season. Cal Poly falls to 8-8 with the loss.
UCLA threatened in the first inning, loading the bases with one out, but were unable to plate a run. The Mustangs scored first, starting the fifth inning with a single to left by shortstop Roni Sparrey. A dropped ball by Bruin first baseman Claire Sua gave Cal Poly runners at second and third, and Sparrey scored on an RBI single by left fielder Nicole Dansby to give the Mustangs a 1-0 lead.
The Bruins would answer in the bottom half of the inning, scoring five runs on as many hits. Centerfielder Amanda Freed and shortstop Natasha Watley opened the inning with back-to-back singles, and both came home on a two-out single by designated player Courtney Dale. Sua followed with a two-run home run, her sixth of the year, and right fielder Lupe Brambila made it back-to-back homers with a shot to left.
In the sixth, left fielder Erin Rahn led off with a single, followed by a bunt single by Freed. A fielders choice by Tairia Mims plated Rahn, and the three game-ending runs were scored by third baseman Stacey Nuveman, who homered to right field, her 10th of the season.
The Bruins return to action this afternoon against No. 11 DePaul. The Bruins and Blue Demons will take the field at approximately 4 pm PT.
