Gymnasts Score 196.050 In Loss To No. 3 Utah
March 10, 2001
SALT LAKE CITY - Stephanie Bychowski tied two career-highs with 9.95 victories on both bars and beam, but the No. 14 Oregon State gymnastics dropped a dual meet to No. 3 Utah at the Huntsman Center on Saturday. The Utes posted a 197.425 to OSU's 196.050.
'We competed much better as a team tonight. The energy level was like a home team, not a road team, and that's good to see,' said coach Tanya Chaplin.
The Beavers opened the meet with an impressive effort on bars, nearly matching their season-high with a 49.350 on the event (just .05 off their high). Bychowski won the event for the fifth time this year with her career-high tying 9.95, while Elizabeth Jillson addded a 9.90. Lara Degenhardt's 9.875, Annie Campbell's career-high tying 9.825 and Lindsay Nelson's 9.80 also aided in the team score, which was OSU's best road score on the event this season. Soni Meduna turned in a solid routine and scored a 9.375 after falling on her dismount.
Utah put together a 49.450 on vault in its first rotation to hold a narrow lead over the Beavers after one event. Veronique Leclerc led the Utes with a near-perfect 9.975, while Melissa Vituj scored 9.90.
OSU just missed a season-high on vault as well, posting a 48.875 (.025 off the high). Katrina Severin scored a 9.90 to tie for second, while Degenhardt tied her season-high with 9.875 to tie for fourth place. Campbell also notched a season-high 9.825 after performing a 10.0 valued vault for the first time this season. Campbell's previous vault was valued at a maximum of 9.80. Nelson (9.65), Meduna (9.625) and Elaine Yoder (9.60) rounded out the vault scores for OSU.
The Utes added to their lead with a season-high 49.675 on bars, including three gymnasts with 9.95 scores to tie Bychowski for the win. That gave Utah a 99.125-98.225 lead halfway through the meet.
Severin helped OSU gain some ground in the third rotation with a 9.925 on floor, marking the fifth time she's scored that high on the event this year. Degenhardt added a 9.85, and Marissa Bruch scored a 9.80. OSU finished the event with a 48.950, while the Utes had to count a fall on beam for a 48.775 to narrow their lead to .725 heading into the final rotation.
OSU's first two competitors fell on beam, forcing the Beavers to count a fall of their own as well. Bruch and Campbell posted back-to-back 9.85 marks to tie for fourth place and get OSU back on track. Severin followed with a second-place 9.875 to set up Bychowski, who won the event for the third time this year with her second 9.95 of the night.
The Beavers, who have been on the road the last three weeks, return home for next week's Shanico Inn-vitational, set for Saturday, March 17 at 7 p.m.
'We're looking forward to next week's Shanico Inn-vitational, and we hope to build on this last road trip experience before heading to Washington for Pac-10s.'
