No. 4 Softball Blanks No. 9 Arizona State To Advance To Championship Game At The NIST

March 10, 2001

SUNNYVALE, CA - After defeating the Long Beach State 49ers, 1-0, and the No 24 Oregon Ducks, 6-0, earlier in the day at the National Invitational Softball Tournament at Twin Creeks Sports Complex in Sunnyvale, CA, the No. 4 California Golden Bears had to face another familiar Pac-10 foe in No. 9 Arizona State, defeating the Sun Devils, 2-0, to advance to the championship game tomorrow afternoon, Feb. 11, at 2 p.m.

The Bears jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the first. Sophomore Kristen Morley drew a leadoff walk and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by senior Pauline Dueas. Senior Paige Bowie followed with a single up the middle, bringing in Morley from second. With Bowie on first, sophomore Veronica Nelson reached base after being hit with a pitch. Junior Candace Harper then reached on a fielder's choice as Nelson was out at second on the play with Bowie moving to third. Sophomore Eryn Manahan followed with an intentional walk to set up the bases loaded force out. Sun Devil pitcher Erica Beach got what she wanted, a bouncer back to the pitcher, but a botched feed to the catcher allowed Bowie to score the Bears second run in the inning.

With runners on first and second and no outs in the fifth for ASU, Cal brought in junior Jocelyn Forest to put out the fire, sandwiching a popup to Manahan at second in between two Sun Devil strikeouts.

Two runs would be all that the Bears pitching staff would need, as senior Nicole DiSalvio earned the win to improve to 12-0, pitching four shutout innings with three hits allowed and one strikeout. Forest, throwing the remaining three innings of one-hit shutout ball including six strikeouts, earned her second save in the tournament. Forest now has now pitched in 77 consecutive shutout innings to rank seventh all-time in the NCAA.

Cal now finds itself in the championship game of the NIST to be played at 2 p.m. versus either Virginia Tech, No. 12 Iowa or No. 9 Arizona State. The Bears defeated Iowa last night, 3-0 in pool play
