No. 9 Softball Wins Pool (A) At The NIST

SUNNYVALE, Calif. -- Behind a combined two-hit pitching performance from All-Americans Erica Beach and Kirsten Voak, the ninth-ranked Arizona State softball team (20-5) shut out Purdue, 5-0 tonight.
The victory enabled the Sun Devils to win its pool at the National Invitation Softball Tournament and will advance on to the championship bracket.
The Sun Devils will play the winner of the Iowa vs. Virginia Tech game at 4:00 p.m. Pacific time on Saturday.
ASU scattered 10 hits, while Beach and Voak limited the Boilermakers to two hits. ASU scored once in the first, second, fifth and twice in the sixth inning to seal the win.
Phalen Wright scored ASU's first run when she singled to left field to drive in Kara Brun. In the second inning, Nichole Thompson singled in Stacey Farnworth to put ASU up 2-0.
To seal the win in the sixth, Shiloh Talanoa began with a walk. Nicole Cullen then pinch ran for Talanoa and stole second base. After a sacrifice by Jennifer Forner to move Cullen to third, Thompson singled to second base, scoring Cullen.
Voak then helped her own cause with a single to center field to plate Thompson for the final run of the game. Thompson ended the game with a 3-for-4 night with two RBIs and a run scored. Brun went 1-for-2 with two runs scored, continuing her hitting streak to 12 games.
Beach started the game, going three innings on two hits. Voak (6-1) then slammed the door for the final four innings as she struck out seven of the 12 batters she faced.
