OSU Homers Four Times In Win

March 10, 2001

YAKIMA, Wash. - Oregon State won its third straight game and Josh Carter extended his hitting streak to 17 games with an 11-10 win over Washington State in non-league baseball Saturday afternoon at Parker Field. OSU (11-8 overall, 0-0 Pacific-10) banged out 17 hits, including four home runs.

The Beavers and Cougars (5-13, 0-0) wrap up their three-game series Sunday at noon. The game can be heard on KLOO-AM (1340).

On Saturday, Carter doubled home a pair of runs in the first inning and later added a run-scoring triple on the way to a 3-for-5 day, he lacked only a home run to hit for the cycle. He never got a chance to try to complete the cycle, as he was on deck when the Beavers' half of the ninth inning ended.

Carter's teammates provided the round-trippers, though, as Brian Barden, Andy Jarvis, Bryan Ingram and Chris Biles all homered. Eric Stark was 2-for-5 with a run-scoring double and a stolen base for the Beavers, while Biles was 2-for-5 with a double and a homer, Will Hudson was 2-for-4, and Barden and Ingram were both 2-for-5 with homers.

OSU has averaged just over 15 hits in each of its last four games and is now batting .331 as a team. Carter, who has a hit in every game he's played this season, is now batting .478, Curtis Davis is at .472 after a 2-for-4 day.

With the win, the Beavers improved their record in one-run games this season to 5-2 and OSU is 7-2 in games decided by two runs or less. Oregon State has won 11 of its last 16 games.

After Carter's two-run double in the first, the Beavers pushed their lead to 4-0 on solo homers by Ingram in the second inning and Barden in the third. Oregon State then jumped in front 9-1 with a five-run fifth inning that included two-run homers by Jarvis and Biles, that duo now shares the team lead with five homers each this spring.

WSU got back in the game quickly, though, scoring four times in the bottom of the fifth. Beaver starter Mark McLemore, who hadn't allowed an earned run through four innings, nearly got through the inning but gave way to Chris Wilkins, who got the final out.

McLemore went 4 2/3 innings, his second-longest outing of the spring, and allowed five runs (three earned) on seven hits and one walk, striking out three. Wilkins earned the win in relief, in 3 1/3 innings, he allowed four runs (three earned) on four hits, not walking a batter and striking out three.

OSU took an 11-9 advantage into the bottom of the ninth for closer Stephen Copeland. Brent Robertson led off with a double and was singled home by Aaron Smith to put the tying run on base.

But when one of Copeland's pitches to Justin Williams was in the dirt, Smith headed for second base. Beaver catcher Ingram had blocked the ball, though, and threw Smith out, Copeland then struck out Williams and Garrett Alwert to end the game and pick up his third save.

For the Cougars, Stefan Bailie was 3-for-5 with a homer, a double and four runs batted in. WSU starter Justin Cayatano suffered his first loss of the season, in 4 1/3 innings, he allowed six runs (all earned) on seven hits and two walks, striking out two.
