Ft. Lauderdale, FL - The U.S. Under-20 Men's National Team continued their final preparations for CONCACAF qualifying by defeating Haiti Select, 5-1, at Ted Hendricks Stadium Mar. 11. UCLA freshmen DJ Countess, Nelson Akwari and Alex Yi led the U.S. defense, and Landon Donovan scored two goals and set up two others.
Haiti Select fielded two Haitian National Team members for the clash, but were outclassed by a younger U.S. side. Also scoring for the Americans were DaMarcus Beasley, Kelly Gray and Kyle Martino.
'I was happy with the overall performance and especially our ability to go forward,' said U.S. head coach Wolfgang Sunholz. 'We are really beginning to gel as a team and are looking forward to getting to Trinidad.'
Countess recorded 56 shutout minutes before being relieved by Portland's Curtis Spiteri. The two goalkeepers combined to make three saves. Both Akwari and Yi played all 90 minutes of the game and helped limit the Haiti team to just six shots.
The Under-20s will play the Miami Fusion in their final match Tuesday before departing for CONCACAF qualifying in Trinidad on Wednesday.
The U.S. opens the qualifying tournament at the Dr. Joao Havelange Centre of Excellence in Tunapuna, Trinidad, against Guatemala on March 18, then faces Trinidad & Tobago on March 20 and Costa Rica on March 22. The top two teams from the group will advance to the 2001 World Youth Championship from June 17-July 8 in Argentina.
