Incredible Eighth Inning Wins For OSU

March 13, 2001

CORVALLIS, Ore. - Oregon State scored 10 runs with two out in the eighth inning to beat Gonzaga 12-6 in non-league baseball Tuesday afternoon at Goss Stadium at Coleman Field. Josh Carter stretched his hitting streak to 26 games over two seasons with a sixth-inning single for OSU (12-9 overall, 0-0 Pacific-10), then had a grand slam in the eighth-inning rally.

The Beavers and Bulldogs (7-8, 2-1 West Coast) wrap up their midweek series Wednesday at 1 p.m. at OSU.

On Friday, Gonzaga scored six unearned runs in the second inning and held the lead until the bottom of the eighth. After the first two Beaver hitters were put out, OSU scored 10 times on six hits, four walks and a hit batter against three Gonzaga relievers.

'Our guys are aware of the mistakes we made early,' said OSU head coach Pat Casey. 'They addressed the problem, they hung with it and they fixed it on their own.'

The Bulldogs' six-run second inning included Kevin Cave's grand slam to centerfield. The Bulldogs still led 6-2 going into the bottom of the eighth, and GU reliever Eric Everson retired the first two hitters he faced.

But Jason McBride - who had homered in the fourth inning - poked a triple down the rightfield line, Brian Barden walked and Andy Jarvis looped a run-scoring single to right-center to make it 6-3. Pinch-hitter Curtis Davis drove a run-scoring single to right to make it 6-4, and Kerisi Reynolds walked to load the bases.

Zach Gordon then drew a four-pitch walk to cut the gap to 6-5 and Everson gave way to Phil Banta. With Eric Stark at the plate, Banta balked to bring home the tying run, Stark then grounded a run-scoring infield single over the mound to give the Beavers their first lead at 7-6. After Chris Biles walked, Carter drove a one-ball, no-strike pitch over the back fence in leftfield to make it 11-6.

'That one felt good,' Carter said. 'He threw me a first-pitch fastball and I knew he'd come back with another one. I hit it as hard as I could, and it went. And we got the win - that's the big thing.'

Carter's hitting streak was in jeopardy after he struck out in the first inning and flied to right in the fourth against GU starter Kyle Nearhood.

'It was tough,' Carter said. 'I wasn't down, though. I tried to keep my head up and stay positive. We couldn't let down as a team, and I didn't want to let my team down.'

In the sixth, he jumped on the first pitch from reliever Sean Ingalls and drove it just over the head of third baseman Johnny Gebbers for a single.

'That was a big relief,' Carter said. 'I'm not going out there as a `me' guy, but I wanted to do what was best for the team. We needed some hits, and I wanted to do whatever we needed to get a win today.'

Carter finished 2-for-5 and is now batting .468 this season with six homers and 26 runs batted in, Barden was 3-for-3 to raise his average to .330. Jarvis went 2-for-4 to boost his average to .337 with a team-high 32 RBIs and Davis' pinch-hit gives him a .475 average for the season.

For the second time in OSU's last three games, Chris Wilkins won in relief, Wilkins pitched two scoreless innings and allowed one hit and one walk. Ben Rowe kept OSU in the game with 4 1/3 scoreless innings, allowing three hits and one walk and striking out two.

For GU, every starter had at least one hit and Cave was 2-for-5 with four RBIs. Nearhood pitched five innings for the Bulldogs, giving up just one run on three hits and one walk while striking out five.
