Beavers Rally Again, Win Again

March 14, 2001

CORVALLIS, Ore. - Brian Barden singled through a six-man infield in the bottom of the ninth inning to drive in the winning run as Oregon State beat Gonzaga 10-9 in non-league baseball Wednesday afternoon at Goss Stadium at Coleman Field. Josh Carter saw his hitting streak end at 26 games for OSU (13-9 overall, 0-0 Pacific-10), but had a walk during the Beavers' ninth-inning rally.

Oregon State continues its homestand this weekend against Minnesota, the defending Big Ten champion. The three-game series will be Friday at 2 p.m., Saturday at 1 p.m. and Sunday at 11 a.m., the games Saturday and Sunday can be heard on KLOO-AM (1340).

On Wednesday, OSU played 'crazy eights' for the second straight day, scoring six runs in the eighth inning to take a 9-6 lead. That came a day after the Beavers scored 10 runs with two out in the eighth inning of a 12-6 win. This time, Gonzaga (7-9 overall, 2-1 West Coast) rallied for three runs in the top of the ninth before the Beavers' run in the bottom of the ninth gave Oregon State its fifth win in six games. OSU has now won seven games this season in which it trailed going into the seventh inning, and the Beavers are 6-3 in one-run games.

'With the long stretch of games we've had, finding ways to win is important,' said OSU head coach Pat Casey, whose team was playing its 10th game in 13 days. 'We used almost our whole club, and it seemed like every guy we brought in responded at the plate or on the mound.'

Barden made the final contribution. With the bases loaded and none out in the bottom of the ninth, Gonzaga put centerfielder Kevin Cave between its shortstop and third baseman and drew its infield in. Barden grounded the ball sharply past pitcher Matt Reding, and the other Bulldog infielders were unable to reach the ball.

'I was just trying to drive the ball hard to the outfield,' said Barden, who was 3-for-4 to move his hitting streak to 10 games and his batting average to .347. 'When I hit it, I had some doubts whether it would get by the pitcher. As soon as it was by him, I knew it would get through ... when I was up there, I felt it was my duty to get the winning run home because I'd made that error.'

'That error' was one of three OSU committed in the top of the ninth, allowing Gonzaga to score three unearned runs and tie the game 9-9. Barden bobbled a grounder from pinch-hitter Jeremy Doane that could have led to a game-ending double play, instead, the Bulldogs eventually tied the game on Cave's two-run single.

Gonzaga had a 16-12 edge in hits Wednesday, and the Bulldogs were outhitting the Beavers 15-4 through seven innings. Oregon State once again picked up the pace in the eighth, though.

'I don't know what it is,' Barden said of the back-to-back eighth-inning rallies. 'We were just slow starting ... I guess we like to make it exciting.'

OSU scored five of its six runs with two out in the inning, getting run-scoring singles from pinch-hitters Curtis Davis and Chris Biles, an RBI double from Bryan Ingram and a two-run single by Will Hudson.

Stephen Copeland earned the win for OSU, improving to 3-1 this season. Relievers Paul Williams, Craig Hays, Corky Wray and Jake Postlewait combined to pitch 4 1/3 scoreless innings to give OSU a chance to come back after the Bulldogs jumped on starter Thad Johnson for a 6-0 lead by the middle of the fourth inning.

Jason McBride started OSU's scoring in the bottom of the fourth with a solo homer, he has homered in three straight home games and is batting .429 this season. Davis' single lifted his battng average to .483 and his hitting streak to 10 games, while the end of Carter's streak still left him with a .444 average.
