IOWA CITY, Iowa - Oregon State 157-pounder Eric Jorgensen and 174-pounder Nathan Coy were headed for the quarterfinals when the first day of the NCAA Wrestling Championships concluded Thursday night at Carver-Hawkeye Arena. The Beavers are in 13th place in the team race and have six of their seven entrants still in the tournament going into Friday's action.
In Friday morning's quarterfinals, the fourth-seeded Jorgensen will meet 12th-seeded Shane Roller of Oklahoma State and the eighth-seeded Coy will meet top-seeded Josh Koscheck of Einboro. Beavers in the second round of wrestlebacks are 125-pounder Nathan Navarro, 133-pounder Ben Richards, 141-pounder Shane Cunanan and 11th-seeded heavyweight Jason Cooley. The only OSU wrestler eliminated on the first day was 165-pounder Jed Pennell, and he recorded team bonus points for a pin before bowing out.
Jorgensen, a senior, reached the quarterfinals with a 13-1 major decision over Max Odom of Harvard and a 7-1 win over Shaun Shapert of Edinboro. Jorgensen defeated his quarterfinal opponent, Roller, 10-9 in overtime in a Feb. 2 dual meet at Oklahoma State.

Navarro had been beaten 6-5 by Eric Dunmire of Northern Iowa in the preliminary round of the championship bracket.
