No. 17 Oregon Wrestling Results Following Session I Of NCAA Tournament

IOWA CITY, Iowa - The No. 17 University of Oregon wrestling team is tied for 40th place after the first session of the NCAA Championships in Iowa City, Iowa. The Ducks suffered an early setback when sophomore Brian Watson failed to make weight at 133. Watson was the only wrestler to not make weight on the first day.
Senior all-American Doug Lee got Oregon's first and only win of the early session with a 15-3 major decision over Jeffrey Moskyok of Duquesne to score the Ducks' only two points of the morning. Lee dominated the match, scoring four two-point takedowns in the first period and allowing Moskyok three one-point escapes. Lee went on to score two more takedowns and had two escapes while holding Moskyok scoreless in the final two periods. In Session II, Lee will wrestle unseeded Josh Lambrecht of Oklahoma, who upset 11th seeded Rob Rohn of Lehigh in his first match.
Oregon senior all-American Chael Sonnen was seeded sixth heading into the tournament, but couldn't manage to score points for the Ducks in the first session. Sonnen was upset by Wyoming's Craig Rumsey, 8-7. Sonnen carried a 7-5 lead into the third period, but went scoreless in the final two minutes. Rumsey capitalized, scoring an escape to pull within a point, 7-6. With just 32 seconds remaining in the bout Rumsey scored a two-point takedown and held on to win.
At 125, Shaun Williams opened the day against fifth-seeded Matt Ridlings of Oklahoma. Williams scored two early takedowns to take a 4-0 lead. Ridlings responded with 11-straight points to win 11-4 and advance in the championship bracket. Ridlings rode Williams out in the entire third period and capped the bout with a three point near fall. Williams will face No. 12 seed Tom Noto of Hofstra in Session II. Noto was upset by Lehigh's Mario Stuart in the first round, 7-6.
At 149 Tony Overstake faced 10th seeded Keaton Anderson of Ohio State and lost by major decision, 11-3. Anderson scored two quick takedowns and allowed Overstake an escape point to go ahead 4-1 in the first period. Anderson scored two more takedowns in the second period and one in the third period to extend his lead to 10-1. Overstake got his only two-point takedown late in the third period, but Anderson's 3:55 riding time gave him the major decision. In the 149 wrestlebacks, Overstake will look to stay alive against Nate Wachter of Penn St. Wachter lost by major decision to Lock Haven's JaMarr Billman in Session I.
In the 157-pound weight class, Eugene Harris faced No. 7 seed Cole Sanderson of Iowa State in his first bout of the tournament. The match was delayed briefly when Harris had trouble with an already injured knee. Sanderson then scored two-point takedown and gave up and escape point early in the first period to take a 2-1 lead. With 1:21 left in the first period, Sanderson scored his second takedown and allowed Harris another escape to build his lead to 4-2. The only other scoring came with five seconds remaining in the second period, when Sanderson scored another takedown and Harris scored on one final escape. Sanderson held on for the 6-3 win. Harris will face Dennis Papadatos in Session II, who upset eighth seeded Ed Hockenberry in the pigtail round of the first session.
Oregon freshman Luke Larwin drew the toughest draw for the Ducks in Session I, facing No. 1 seed Donny Pritzlaff of Wisconsin. In his first NCAA match, Larwin was defeated by technical fall, 25-8 at 6:52.
The NCAA tournament is a double-elimination competition. Lee is the only wrestler guaranteed to move onto Session III tomorrow morning. All other Oregon wrestler's must win in Session II to advance. Session II begins at 4:30 p.m. PST.
