Oregon State Announces Football Schedule Change

March 16, 2001

CORVALLIS, Ore. - Oregon State has made a change in its 2001 football schedule, replacing a home date with North Texas on September 8 for a game at New Mexico State on the same date. The change was announced Friday by Director of Athletics Mitch Barnhart.

The change was made necessary as a result of a scheduling conflict with North Texas, which had 12 regular season games on its schedule in 2001, one over the NCAA limit. The OSU-North Texas game was part of a 1995 contract that had the Beavers playing at Denton, Texas in 1995, and at Corvallis in 1997 and 2001.

This past fall it was discovered that North Texas had entered into a contract to play at Oklahoma with a more sizeable guarantee on the same date, Sept. 8. Every attempt to rectify the situation was explored by both schools. However, because of the short notice, any opportunity to fill this slot with a home game for OSU was non-existent.

To resolve the schedule conflict, North Texas agreed to a negotiated buyout of the 1995 contract for $200.000, a figure that would represent the approximate net ticket revenue if the game had been played in Corvallis.

To complete its 2001 schedule, Oregon State will now play New Mexico State in Las Cruces, N.M. on September 8. In return for the Beavers playing at New Mexico this year, OSU and Aggies are negotiating for games to be played between the two schools in Corvallis in 2003 and 2007.

With North Texas off the Beavers' schedule, Oregon State is presently left with only five home games for the 2001 season, something that hasn't happened since 1995.

While the Beavers now have an 11-game schedule for 2001, there is still a possibility that OSU could add a sixth home game for 2001.

Barnhart is currently negotiating for an exempt preseason home game against an unnamed opponent with the Black Coaches Association. The BCA has approval from the NCAA to sponsor a preseason contest.

If Oregon State's schedule remains with five home games, the athletic department will be refunding money to those who have already purchased tickets. However, if a deal is consummated for a home preseason game, it is probable that the season ticket holders will be billed an additional amount because of a higher ticket price set by the BCA.

The decision on a 12th game should be reached within the next two weeks, Barnhart indicated.
