Beavers Set School Record 197.625 At Shanico Meet
March 17, 2001
CORVALLIS, Ore. - The seniors on the Oregon State gymnastics team will always remember their final competition in Gill Coliseum, especially Marissa Bruch.
Each of the seniors had at least one score of 9.90 or better to help the No. 14 Beavers set a school record 197.625 to win the Shanico Inn-vitational on Saturday evening. Washington came in second at 195.775, followed by Cal State Fullerton (194.175) and Seattle Pacific (192.575).
'By far it's the best meet of the year,' said coach Tanya Chaplin. 'We went 23-for-24, and for it being dead week (the week before finals), they did an awesome job. Usually they come out a little flat during dead week. The last couple weeks we've been getting better and better. I think we are on track.'
Bruch scored a career-high 9.95 on the balance beam to win her first-ever collegiate title, but that's probably not what she'll remember most about her final meet in Corvallis. Her boyfriend, Steve Rodriguez, proposed in front of 3,484 fans after the meet, and Bruch's 'Yes' capped off an already outstanding night.
'Riss had an all-time night,' Chaplin said of the senior, who also scored a 9.85 on her floor routine. 'This was a great atmosphere for senior night.'
In addition to Bruch's win on beam, the Beavers also got a victory from another senior. Lara Degenhardt won floor with a 9.975, and she chipped in a second-place 9.95 on vault for her best score of the year on that event. Katrina Severin finished the night with marks of 9.90 or better on all three of her events, with a 9.95 on floor, a career-high 9.925 on beam and a 9.90 on vault. Stephanie Bychowski, OSU's fourth senior, added a 9.925 on beam but fell on bars for a 9.125.
With the three seniors in the beam lineup all scoring at least a 9.925, the Beavers set a school record 49.575 on the event. OSU also got a career-high 9.925 from Annie Campbell, while Elaine Yoder tacked on a 9.85 in the record-setting third rotation.
OSU opened the meet with a great start on vault, scoring a season-high 49.250. Degenhardt's 9.95 led the way, while Severin and Campbell added 9.90 marks. Campbell's score tied her career-high, while Soni Meduna received the maximum score of 9.80 for her perfect handspring front tuck to set a new career-high. Lindsay Nelson and Yoder scored 9.70 and 9.65, respectively.
Meduna added her second career-high of the night when she led off the Beaver bars team with a 9.775. OSU's next three competitors scored 9.875, which marked a career-high for Campbell and tied a career-high for Nelson. Degenhardt also received a 9.875 score to set up Elizabeth Jillson, who led OSU with a 9.90.
The Beavers closed out the meet with a season-high 49.500 on floor, highlighted by Degenhardt's 9.975. It's the second time this year she's received a 10.0 from one judge but a 9.95 from the other. Campbell joined Degenhardt and Severin in the 9.90 club on floor with her season-high of 9.925. Bruch's 9.85 and Yoder's 9.80 rounded out the near-record performance (just .075 off the school record set at last year's Shanico meet).
Campbell, who scored a 9.90 or better on three of the four events, won the all-around with a personal best of 39.625, the fourth best all-around score in school history. She tied for third on vault, beam and floor and was fourth on bars.
Washington's Lanna Apisukh grabbed the vault title with a perfect 10.0, becoming the first gymnast to receive a perfect score on any event at the Shanico. Fullerton's Joanna Hughes and Jamie Moody shared the bars title with scores of 9.925.
Fullerton's Kelly Mathiasen was declared the winner of the Scholar Athlete Award. The award is presented to the gymnast with the highest combined all-around score and grade point average. Mathiasen scored a 39.325 in the all-around competition.
