No. 10 Softball Defeats No. 24 Cal State Northridge, 5-3
March 17, 2001
FULLERTON, Calif. -- Behind a five run fifth inning, the 10th-ranked Arizona State softball team (25-7) defeated 24th-ranked Cal State Northridge, 5-3, today to advance to tonight's quarterfinals of the KIA Klassic against 14th-ranked Notre Dame at 7:00 p.m. Pacific.
Northridge gained the early lead by scoring once in the fourth inning and twice in the fifth inning to take a 3-0 advantage.
However, as ASU has done in several games this season, they rallied for five runs in the bottom of the fifth to secure the win.
Erica Beach started the rally with a single to center field. Alicia Flanagan then pinch ran for Beach. After one out, Shiloh Talanoa singled to left field to advance Flanagan to second. Nicole Cullen then replaced Talanoa as a pinch runner.
Bonnie Brannen then worked a 0-2 count into a walk to load the bases. Jennifer Forner also earned a walk to score the first run and to reload the bases. Kristin Farber followed with an infield hit to score Cullen from third to cut the lead to 3-2.
Now with two outs, Kara Brun unloaded a towering shot to deep left field, which the Northridge out fielder nearly caught, but ticked off her glove to clear the bases for a three run double. Phalen Wright followed with single to left filed, but Brun was thrown out at the plate trying to score to end the inning.
Wright's single continued her team-leading 13 game hitting streak.
Beach started the game, going four and a third innings before giving away to Kirsten Voak (9-3), who finished the final two and two thirds innings.
With the win, Voak posted her 63rd career victory to move her into second all-time in ASU history.
