Steven Earns All-America Honors In 200 Breaststroke

March 17, 2001

LONG ISLAND, N.Y. - After coming up .01 seconds short of qualifying for the 100-yard breaststroke final at the NCAA Women's Swimming Championships on Friday, one might think Oregon State freshman Birte Steven couldn't cut it any closer in Saturday's 200 breaststroke preliminaries. Well, Steven did just that, as it took a tie-breaking swim-off to qualify for the evening's final round and earn All-American status.

Steven and Anna Christiansen of Illinois came down the homestretch of Saturday morning's 200 prelims in a dead heat, and both touched the wall to finish in a time of 2:15.46 and tie for 16th to set up a tiebreaking race.Steven turned in a prime-time performance in the tiebreaker, as she easily beat Christiansen 2:14.92-2:19.79 to qualify for the finals.

'I am pretty excited about it, but I'm not satisfied with my performance,' Steven commented on the weekend. 'I'm proud to be here for OSU though.

'I learned a lot about my swimming and what I have to work on. I learned what my weaknesses are compared to the other swimmers here.'

Steven became just the second swimmer in OSU history to earn All-America status, as she finished 16th overall in the 200 breaststroke with her time of 2:15.24. Amy van Loben Sels was an All-America in 1994 and 1995 as a sprint freestyler.

'This validates what we've done at OSU,' coach Mariusz Podkoscielny said of Steven becoming the first OSU All-American during his five years at Oregon State. 'This was our first year at the NCAAs, and we scored. This was a great experiece, we learned a lot of things this weekend, so we'll be a lot smarter next year. I'm excited about it.'
