WSU Rallies For 14-9 Win Over ORU
March 18, 2001
TULSA, Okla. -- - Held hitless through five innings, Washington State exploded for 12 hits and 14 runs over the final four innings to hand host Oral Roberts a second straight defeat 14-9 Sunday at J.L. Johnson Stadium.
The Cougars (8-14) struggled off ORU starter Trevor Leu and trailed 5-0 after five innings. Then the WSU batters began to find holes in the Golden Eagle defense, scoring a pair of runs in the sixth, then coming back with four in the eighth and a big eight runs in the ninth, making a winner of Donny Davis (2-2), who took over in the seventh. WSU's 14 runs was the team's biggest offensive output of the year.
The win was WSU's second over ORU (13-5) in the three-game weekend series and gave the Cougars their first series victory of the season. David Humen (1-1), the fourth of five ORU pitchers took the loss.
Cougar starter Justin Cayetano worked into the fourth before being replaced by Lanakila Niles. Oral Roberts' two runs in the second inning and three in the fourth were charged to Cayetano. Niles gave the Cougars three strong innings, allowing just three hits and one run, a single tally in the seventh before Davis entered the game.
In the eighth, ORU tallied three times off Davis for a 9-6 advantage, but the Cougar reliever then settled down and shut the door on the host club in the ninth.
Meanwhile WSU chipped away at ORU's lead, starting with a pair of runs in the sixth. In the eighth WSU evened the score 6-6 with four runs. Tanner Kahler, Richard Hall, Mike Knight and Stefan Bailie all had run-scoring singles in the eighth.
In ninth and trailing 9-6 after ORU's three-spot in the bottom of the eighth, WSU battled back with their biggest inning of the season. The big hits were Tyson Boston's three-run home run, his second of the year, and a bases loaded double by Bookie Gates that scored all three runners. Brent Robertson also had a run-scoring double with two out.
Jon Baeder started WSU's comeback in the ninth with a single to right field and then advanced to second on a passed ball. Next Robertson earned a walk off Dallas Martin, who was then replaced on the mound by Humen. Boston promptly unloaded on the ORU reliever with a three-run blast to left field that evened the score 9-9. After Kahler flew out to left, Justin Williams drew a walk, but Hall then struck out for WSU's second out.
Knight and Bailie then worked Humen for walks to load the bases, bringing Gates to the plate. The Cougar second baseman delivered the game winner with a double to left field that cleared the bases and put the Cougars up 12-9.
Baeder, who had started off the inning with a single, reached base for the second time, this time on a fielding error at first base that allowed Gates to score from second base. Trey Stephens then took over on the mound for Humen and Robertson rudely greeted him with a run-scoring double to right field, giving the Cougars their final 14-9 lead.
In the ninth Davis gave up a one-out single and a walk, then retired the final two Golden Eagle batters, the last with a strikeout, to end the game.
