No. 2 Men's Swimming Heads To NCAA Championships
March 19, 2001
This Week: No. 2 Stanford travels to College Station, Texas for the 2001 NCAA Men's Swimming and Diving Championships, Thursday through Saturday, March 22-24. The Cardinal will field a team of 15 swimmers for the championship meet. A total of 44 teams will be represented by 235 swimmers at this year's championships. Stanford will have at least one swimmer in every individual event and a team in all of the relay events.
Last Year At NCAAs: The Cardinal went into NCAA's ranked sixth nationally and got some great performances from both its freshman class as well as from its veterans. Adam Messner won his first career national championship in the 200-meter fly and placed second in the 200 free. Steven Brown took fifth in the 400 free while Dan Wescott finished ninth in the 200 back. Rob Canales took 10th in the 200 IM while Anthony Robinson was 16th in the 50 free. Texas won the NCAA title with 538 points followed by Auburn (385). Arizona was third with 360.5 and Stanford finished fourth (279.5).
2001 Pac-10 Championships: The Cardinal won their 20th consecutive conference championship in grand style, outdistancing the field by over 100 points. Stanford led comfortably all three days. The Cardinal won six individual titles (Markus Rogan-200 IM, 200 back, Adam Messner-200 fly, Bobby O'Bryan- 100 fly, Anthony Robinson-100 breast, and Randall Bal-100 back) and three relays (200 medley relay, 200 free relay, 400 medley relay). Robinson set a Pac-10 meet record in the 100 breast in the morning prelims with a time of :53.18. He also took second in the 50 free with a time of :19.48 while Messner placed second in the 200 free (1:35.74). Stanford's winning time of 1:26.02 in the 200 medley relay was also a Pac-10 meet record. The 20 consecutive league titles is the longest in the Pac-10 by any sport.
Youth Is Served: Perhaps the biggest surpise for the Cardinal this season has been the contributions of the freshman class ... two freshmen won three individual events at Pac-10s and were vital on several of the Cardinal's winning relay squads ... nine of Stanford's 15 swimmers competing at NCAA's this season are underclassmen ... three sophomores and six freshmen.
Nationally Speaking...: Senior Anthony Robinson holds the third fastest time nationally in the 50 free (19.48) and 100 breast (53.18) this season ... sophomore Randall Bal also has the third fastest time in his event, the 100 back, with a time of 46.91 ... freshmen Markus Rogan and Peter Marshall are 3-4 nationally in the 200 back (1:42.58 and 1:43.47 respectively) ... freshman Bobby O'Bryan's time of 47.13 in the 100 fly ranks fourth in the nation ... seniors Adam Messner and Steven Brown are 4-5 in the 200 fly (1:44.04 and 1:44.24 respectively) ... Rogan is fourth nationally in the 200 IM (1:45.92) ... Brown's time of 3:44.00 is the fifth fastest time this year in the 400 IM ... the Cardinal relay team has the top time nationally in the 200 free relay (1:17.63).
Head Coach Skip Kenney: Stanford head coach Skip Kenney has led the Cardinal to seven NCAA titles, including a runaway win in 1998. He has also been named NCAA Coach of the Year six times, most recently in 1998. In addition, Kenney has led the Cardinal to some of the finest team performances in the history of the NCAA Championship meet. The 1992 squad set meet records for both points scored (632) and victory margin (276 points over Texas), and the 1998 team became the first to have a championship final representative in every individual and relay swimming event. He has also coached a total of 86 All-Americans to 731 All-American honors, and has developed 37 NCAA Champions. His achievements as head coach of Stanford are unparalleled in Pac-10 history. He has guided the Cardinal to 19 straight conference titles, which is far and away the record for consecutive Pac-10 championships in any sport. Kenney has been named Pac-10 Coach of the Year 12 times in the last 18 years.
