HEAD COACH NORT THORTON: Nort Thornton, the 1999 Pacific-10 Coach of the Year, is in his 27th season as Cal's head men's swim coach. Thornton, the dean of the Pac-10 swimming coaches, has a career dual meet record of 194-77 (.716) with the Golden Bears and his squad finished fifth at the 2000 NCAA Championship. Thornton led Cal to back-to-back NCAA titles in 1979 and 1980.

NOTING THE BEARS: The No. 6 ranked California men's swim team finished in third place (540.5 points) at the 2001 Pac-10 Swim Championship Mar. 1-3 at the Belmont Plaza Olympic Pool in Long Beach, CA, trailing only Stanford (844.5) and USC (722.5).

The Bears were paced by sophomore Olympic gold medallist Anthony Ervin, who won the 50 free in a Pac-10 record time of 19.11. Ervin surpassed the former record of 19.15 set by Cal legend Matt Biondi in 1987. Ervin later broke another Pac-10 meet record, this time winning the 100 free with a time of 42.21, surpassing the old mark of 42.29 set by Cal's Bart Kizierowski in 2000.

In the final event of the Pac-10 meet, juniors Matt Macedo and Maciej Burny and freshman Karel Novy joined Ervin to upended Stanford and win the conference title in the 400 free relay with a time of 2:52.20.

Other highlights for Cal at the conference meet were a second place finish in the 200 medley relay (freshman Alex Lim, junior Peter Aronsson, junior Matt Macedo and Ervin) with a school record time of 1:27.47. The Bears also placed second in the 200 free relay (1:77.77, Ervin, Macedo, senior Scott Greenwood, sophomore Frank Uxa) and the 400 medley relay (3:12.44, freshman Alex Lim, sophomore Daniel Kim, Novy, Ervin).

Individually, freshman Alex Lim finished second in the 100 back (47.67) and junior Peter Aronsson was third in both the 100 (54.75) and 200 breast (1:58.69).

The Bears return three All-Americans from last season, Ervin, Macedo and Greenwood. Ervin was the 2000 NCAA champion in both the 50-meter free (21.21) and the 100-meter free (47.36). He was also a member of Cal's 2000 national champion 400-meter free relay (3:11.25) along with Macedo, Bart Kizierowski and Lars Merseburg. Ervin and Macedo, along with Greenwood, were members of the Bears 200-meter free relay that were national runner-ups (1:25.21) in 2000. Ervin and Macedo swam on Cal's 200-meter medley relay that finished fifth nationally last season as well.

The Bears have finished in the Top 10 nationally 21 of the 26 years they have been coached by Nort Thornton.
