March 21, 2001

Malibu -- Pepperdine's Anh Nguyen defeated Bernadette Bayani at No. 5 singles by scores of 6-4, 7-6 (4) to clinch a hard-fought 4-3 win for the 17th-ranked Waves over the 8th-ranked Women of Troy in a dual match played Wednesday afternoon at the Ralphs-Straus Tennis Center in Malibu.

With the loss, USC falls to 12-5 overall, while Pepperdine improves to 11-7 with its fourth-straight win.

The Waves avenged a 4-3 loss suffered to the Trojans at the Marks Tennis Stadium in Los Angeles on February 9.

USC surrendered the critical doubles point to start the match then saw the Waves jump to a 3-1 lead with wins at No. 3 and 4 singles before Nguyen secured the win. The Trojans rallied to win two more matches in three sets when Anita Loyola defeated Cintia Tortorella 7-5, 5-7, 6-3, and Melissa Esmero came back after dropping the first set against Maren Mueller 2-6, 6-2, 7-5.
