Baseball Rallies For 6-4 Win At Arizona
March 24, 2001
TUCSON, Ariz. - Freshman Jon Brewster recorded the go-ahead sacrifice fly in the sixth and freshman Fraser Dizard registered his second save of the season Saturday and the No. 9 USC Trojans rallied for a 6-4 win against the Arizona Wildcats in a Pac-10 Conference game at Frank Sancet Field.
USC (18-10, 3-2) trailed 4-1 in the sixth with one out against Arizona (19-14, 2-3). Bill Peavey and Josh Persell both doubled and the Trojans tied it when freshman Michael Moon hit his first collegiate home run with a two-run shot to right.
Senior Seth Davidson then walked and stole second and third base. With his second stolen base, Davidson set a school record with his 58th career stolen base, surpassing Mark Smith. He scored on Brewster's sacrifice fly.
The Trojans' bullpen came up big late in the game. With runners on first and third with no outs in the bottom of the eighth, Brian Bannister struck out Shelley Duncan. Matt Abram grounded out to short, advancing Ernie Durazo to second. Dizard then entered the game and struck out pinch hitter Kyle Tasco looking to end the inning.
Brian Barre led off the game with a solo home run on the first pitch off Arizona starter Sean Rierson (3-3). The Wildcats answered in the bottom of the inning on a three-run homer to left by Duncan, his 13th of the season off Trojans' starter Rik Currier, who improved to 5-1 on the season.
Arizona added a run in the second when Justyn St. Clair scored on a wild pitch by Currier.
The Trojans will conclude their series with the Wildcats tomorrow at 1 p.m. (Arizona Time). Tomorrow's game will be broadcast live on www.usctrojans.com (starting at noon Pacific Time).
