Blue Defeats Gold in Softball Alumnae Game
March 24, 2001
LOS ANGELES - The current UCLA softball team and numerous alumnae joined together on Saturday afternoon at Easton Stadium for the program's annual Alumnae Classic. After a light-hearted seven innings of play that included a home run hitting contest. The Blue team, coached by current UCLA head coach Sue Enquist, defeated the Gold team, coached by former Bruin mentor Sharron Backus, by a 7-6 margin.
Six of UCLA's softball Olympians participated in the Classic, including Dot Richardson, Lisa Fernandez, Sheila Cornell-Douty, Christie Ambrosi and current Bruin juniors Stacey Nuveman and Amanda Freed (alternate).
The Blue team put together five of their seven runs on the day in the home run hitting contest, in which four players from each team had three swings off of a tee. Nuveman was the only player to hit multiple home runs, clearing the left field scoreboard on all three attempts.
The top-ranked and undefeated Bruins return to regular game action on Friday, March 30, when UCLA opens Pac-10 play with one game at Stanford and two games at California.
