OSU Winning Streak Ends

March 24, 2001

CORVALLIS, Ore. - Oregon State saw its five-game winning streak end with a 10-2 loss to third-ranked Arizona State in Pacific-10 baseball Saturday afternoon at Goss Stadium at Coleman Field. The Beavers (16-10 overall, 0-1 Pacific-10) dropped their Pac-10 opener but have won eight of their last 10 games.

OSU and the Sun Devils (20-5-1, 3-1) continue their series Sunday at 1 p.m. and wrap it up Monday at 1 p.m. Sunday's game can be heard on KLOO-AM (1340).

On Saturday, Arizona State jumped in front on a pair of unearned runs in the top of the second inning. The Sun Devils tacked on two more runs in the third inning and four in the fourth to take an 8-1 lead.

'I don't think that it ever changes that pitching and defense win baseball games,' OSU head coach Pat Casey said. 'We didn't do enough of that today. We had chances to make some good things happen and bail ourselves out of some situations, and we didn't get the job done. We gave a good team some opportunities, and when you do that you make it awfully tough on yourself.'

The Beavers did get good relief work from lefthander Jed Mitchell, who gave up a pair of runs in his first inning of work before blanking the Sun Devils for three innings. Mitchell walked three - all in his first inning - and struck out a career-high seven.

'We need to find guys who can do that with the game on the line,' Casey said of Mitchell's outing. 'It was exciting to see Jed throw well, and that should help his confidence the next time out.'

OSU starter Thad Johnson took the loss, falling to 3-3 on the season. In five innings, Johnson allowed eight runs (six earned) on eight hits and three walks, striking out five.

The Beavers put Johnson in an early hole with a pair of second-inning errors that allowed two unearned runs. In the next two innings, the Sun Devils scored six times on six hits, and three of those were of the infield or bad-hop variety.

Oregon State catcher Bryan Ingram helped limit the damage, throwing out four Sun Devils trying to steal. Ingram was also 2-for-4 and drove in a run, while Eric Stark was 2-for-5 for the Beavers. Brian Barden had his hitting streak stopped at 13 games, going 0-for-4.

ASU lefthander Jon Switzer got the complete-game win, throwing an eight-hitter with three walks and 10 strikeouts as he improved to 4-0 this season. Jeff Phelps was 3-for-3 with a double and a run batted in for the Sun Devils, while Brooks Conrad was 2-for-5 with three RBIs and Dennis Wyrick was 3-for-5 with a double.

The game was delayed by rain 41 minutes in the middle of the fifth inning.
