USC Track And Field Crushes LSU

Los Angeles, Calif. - Juniors Devon Ward, Darrell Rideaux and Miguel Fletcher each recorded personal bests and NCAA provisional qualifying marks while sweeping the top three spots in the 100-meter dash and senior Candace Young ran an NCAA automatic and personal-best time of 11.22 to win the women's 100-meter dash as the USC men trounced the NCAA Indoor Champion LSU Tigers,122-69, and the USC women beat the defending NCAA Outdoor Champion Lady Tigers, 114-85, in dual meet action at Katherine B. Loker Stadium on the campus of USC on Saturday (Mar. 24).
The Trojan men won 15 of the 19 events on the day and recorded five personal-best marks, including an outstanding NCAA automatic qualifying mark of 13.69 (eighth-best ever at USC) as sophomore Ryan Wilson won the 110-meter high hurdles. In the 100-meter dash, Ward's 10.26, Rideaux's 10.27 and Fletcher's 10.31 were all NCAA provisional marks and personal bests, while those three plus sophomore Kareem Kelly ran an NCAA provisional qualifying of 39.39 to win the 400-meter relay. Other outstanding marks for USC included an NCAA provisional height of 7-2 1/2 for freshman Dawid Jaworski in the high jump, an NCAA provisional height of 17-10 1/2 for senior Dennis Kholev in the pole vault, a personal-best and NCAA provisional time of 13.85 for senior Djeke Mambo in the 110-meter high hurdles and a personal-best jump of 50-4 1/2 (wind-aided) for senior Justin Cox in the triple jump. USC also picked up wins from junior Kevin Elliot in the 800 meters (1:52.12) and 1500 meters (3:55.55), junior Justin Neems in the 5000 meters (15:13.03), sophomore Andrew Knutsen in the 3000-meter steeplechase (9:27.20), Wilson in the 400-meter hurdles (53.24), Mambo in the long jump (24-10w), junior Mike Rainis in the shot put (51-0 3/4) and senior Norbert Horvath in the hammer (220-5). The LSU men were led by Traun Smith's NCAA provisional qualifying 51-6 1/4 in the triple jump, while the Tigers' 400-meter relay squad ran an NCAA provisional time of 39.69.
On the women's side, the Women of Troy had an outstanding meet against the defending NCAA champion Lady Tigers, winning 14 of the 18 events and recording eight personal-best marks. Young nipped two-time defending NCAA 100-meter champ and junior Angela Williams as both Trojans recorded NCAA automatic times in the 100 meters. Young's 11.22 time (fourth on the all-time Women of Troy chart) was nearly three-tenths of a second under her previous career best of 11.49, while Williams' 11.23 was her first outdoor mark of the season after winning a silver in the 60-meter dash at the world indoor championships in Portugal two weeks ago. In the 200-meter dash, junior Kinshasa Davis finished second but ran an NCAA provisional qualifying time of 23.32 and Young added another personal-best of 23.66 to take third. In the 800-meter run, senior Brigita Langerholc took top honors with an NCAA provisional time of2:06.16, just edging junior Aleksandra Deren, who finished second with an NCAA provisional and personal-best time of 2:06.17. Other quality marks for USC included an NCAA automatic time of 43.75 for the women's 400-meter relay squad (the defending NCAA champions), a personal-best time (4:36.31) for sophomore Brooke Thomas in a 1500 meter win, an NCAA provisional and personal-best time of 13.34 for junior Natasha Neal in a 100-meter hurdles win and a personal-best and NCAA provisional mark of 188-1 for freshman L'Orangeril Crawford in the hammer. USC also took wins in the long and triple jumps thanks to two personal bests by junior Tatyana Obukhova (20-3 3/4 in the LJ and 42-7 in the triple), while also picking up wins by junior Cynthia Ademiluyi in the shot put (51-8 1/4) and disus (168-2) and by freshman Inga Stasiulionyte in the javelin (171-0) and sophomore Julianna Tudja in the hammer (199-9). For LSU, Ronetta Smith raced her way to a Crowell Field record and NCAA automatic time of 52.23 to win the 400 meter dash, while Muna Lee won the 200 meters in an NCAA provisional time of 23.15.
USC will be in action next weekend at the UC San Diego meet. USC's next home meet is on May 5th as both Trojan teams take on UCLA at Loker Stadium.
