Women's Tennis Wins Seventh in a Row

March 24, 2001

BERKELEY, CA - The No. 11-ranked women's tennis team (11-2, 4-2 Pac-10) took their seventh win in a row today at the Hellman Tennis Courts, defeating No. 12-ranked Northwestern Wildcats (13-4, 5-0 Big Ten), 5-2. Cal has gone undefeated in the month of March, winning their all seven of their matches thus far.

Cal took an early advantage, winning the doubles point to start the day. Senior Anita Kurimay teamed with freshman Raquel Kops-Jones at the No. 1 spot, as the duo knocked out Northwestern's Colleen Cheng and Jessica Rush, 8-2. The Bears sealed the point when the No. 3 tandem of sophomore Christina Fusano and freshman Sekita Grant downed Simona Petrutiu and Ruth Barnes, 9-7, improving their dual match record to 8-1 as a tandem.

In singles, Kops-Jones knocked out Northwestern's Marine Piriou in straight sets, 6-0, 6-3, at the No. 3 spot. Piriou had previously gone undefeated (14-0) in dual match competition, playing mostly at the No. 4 spot for the Wildcats. As many of the first sets were finishing, the weather turned dark and rain began to fall on the courts. After a one-hour delay, however, the matches continued. Northwestern and Cal traded the next three points as freshman Jieun Jacobs fell in straight sets, 6-4, 7-5, in her first straight set loss since Stanford, Feb. 24. At No. 1, Kurimay defeated Colleen Cheng, rallying to overcome a first set loss, 4-6, 6-1, 6-4. Fusano was the next to fall, as she lost to Lia Jackson at the No. 2 spot, 3-6, 6-0, 6-3.

Freshmen Catherine Lynch and Sekita Grant were trying to seal the point for the Bears, as they played into the twilight knowing Cal had a 3-2 lead over the Wildcats. Grant sealed the win when she came back to defeat Ruth Barnes, sister of Cal men's tennis player Adrian Barnes, at No. 6 (1-6, 7-6(5), 6-4). Lynch then wore down Jessica Rush for a 5-7, 7-5, 6-2 victory at No. 5.

Next, the Bears will travel to Fresno State on Tuesday, March 26 to take on the No. 14-ranked Bulldogs.
