Baseball Wins In 10 Innings To Complete Series Sweep At Arizona
March 25, 2001
TUCSON, Ariz. - Senior Seth Davidson's RBI single in the top of the 10th inning proved to be the game-winner Sunday and the No. 9 USC Trojans completed the series sweep with a 8-7 victory against the Arizona Wildcats in a Pac-10 Conference game at Frank Sancet Field. The Trojans are now 19-2 in their last 21 games at Sancet Field.
USC (19-10, 4-2) had a 6-1 lead at one point. The Trojans got three runs in the first when senior Bill Peavey hit a two-run triple, the first of his career, down the right field line. Peavey would score on a sacrifice fly to right by senior Josh Persell. Peavey went 6-for-11 for the weekend series against Arizona (19-15, 2-4).
The Trojans added one in the second and two in the third. In the third, Davidson scored all the way from first after an errant pickoff attempt by Arizona's Joe Little rolled to the Wildcats' dugout.
Arizona, however, received a strong relief performance by David Brockman, who held USC scoreless through four innings. The Wildcats chipped away at the Trojans' lead with a run in the sixth and two runs in the seventh.
Persell made it a 7-5 lead in the eighth when he led off with a solo shot to left, his third of the season. But the Wildcats clawed their way back with two runs in the bottom of the eighth on a two-run triple by shortstop Brad Hassey, who went 4-for-6 on the afternoon. With the go-ahead runner at third, Chad Clark struck out Erik Torres and Fraser Dizard got Ernie Durazo to fly out to end the threat.
Dizard (2-1) threw 2 1/3 scoreless innings, allowing only one hit to pick up the win for the Trojans.
In the Trojans' half of the 10th inning, Persell walked on four straight pitches by Rob Elias (0-3). Pinch runner Josh Self stole second base and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by Rob Garibaldi. Self would score on Davidson's single to right.
The Wildcats had one last chance in the bottom of the 10th. After Ken Riley walked, Justyn St. Clair bunted in front of home and USC catcher Alberto Concepcion threw out pinch runner Jason Shroyer at second. Hassey then hit a ground ball to first as first baseman Jon Brewster made another strong defensive play by throwing out St. Clair at second. Dizard then got Torres to hit a soft liner to second baseman Anthony Lunetta to end the game.
The Trojans will travel to face Cal State Fullerton on Tuesday (March 27) at 7 p.m. and will host San Diego State at Dedeaux Field on Wednesday (March 28) at 5 p.m. Both games will be broadcast live on www.usctrojans.com.
