Ally Marquand Scores Goal For U.S. Women's Soccer Team
March 26, 2001
QUARTEIRA, Portugal - Stanford sophomore Allyson Marquand scored her first international goal with the United States national team on Saturday, but the U.S. squad came up short in a 4-3 loss to Norway in the 5th place match of the Algarve Cup.
Marquand, a defender, tied the game at 1-1 in the 24th minute. She collected a throw in and hit a driven cross from the flush on the right sideline that swerved toward the net. The ball slapped off of the Norway keeper's hands and she batted the ball straight into the right corner of the net.
Marquand, who has started all but one game for the U.S., and Stanford freshman Marcie Ward have both been playing with the full U.S. National team for the last few weeks in the Algarve Cup.
