Aztecs Hold One Stroke Lead Over Oregon Heading to Tuesday's Final Round

March 26, 2001

EUGENE, Ore. -- Junior Aaron Byers fired an amazing 6-under par 66 in Monday's opening round and followed that with an even-par 72 in the afternoon to lead the 2001 Oregon Duck Invitational, being played at the 6,854-yard, par-72 Eugene Country Club, by one stroke over Jeff Wood of UC Santa Barbara, who shot a 72-67-139.

San Diego State capped the afternoon's action by recording the lowest team score of either round, a 5-under 283, to surge to a one-stroke lead over Oregon 576-577. Arizona State and Washington were tied for third at 584, eight strokes back of the Aztecs, while UCLA and UC Santa Barbara came in nine strokes over par at 585.

Wood followed an even-par round in the morning with a 5-under 67 in the afternoon to single-handedly keep UC Santa Barbara in the top five. UCLA's Travis Johnson and Martin Laird of Colorado State were tied for third three strokes back of Byers, while San Diego State's John Leiber and ASU's Brian Nosler came in at 2-under. Leiber was one of three Aztecs to finish in the top 10. Lars Johansson tied for seventh with a 1-under 143, while John Lepak was ninth at even-par.

Oregon's top two players, John Ellis and Chris Carnahan, struggled at times, but managed to find a spot in top 12. Carnahan, a junior from Albany, tied for 10 at 1-over, while Ellis, a sophomore from San Jose, was a stroke back in 12th.

'The first two rounds of a tournament are about putting yourself in a position to win and that's what we did,' said Oregon coach Steve Nosler. 'We didn't play great, but we played well enough to be one of the two teams that have a really great shot at winning. I think San Diego State is a pretty good team, but I'd be disappointed if we don't take advantage of the position we are in.'

Byers, a native of Albany, Ore., kept alive Oregon's hopes of its first team title of the season with a round that was two strokes lower than his previous best of 68, which came at the Ping Arizona Intercollegiate in January. Byers, the 1997 Oregon state champion for West Albany High School, has never won a tournament as a Duck. His best finish, a tie for fifth, also came at the Ping Arizona.

'Aaron Byers played a tremendous first round,' Nosler said. 'He really came up big for us.'

Byers helped Oregon take a one stroke lead over Arizona State, 285-286, following the morning round with his 66. The transfer from Linn-Benton Community College, native had four birdies and a dramatic 60-foot put for an eagle on the par-5 eighth in the first 18 holes.

But Brian Nosler, who is the nephew of Oregon head coach Steve Nosler, helped Arizona State keep pace with a 5-under round of 67 that included five birdies and no bogeys. Washington was four strokes back after the morning round at 289, while UCLA was fourth at 290.

Oregon's Mike Sica turned in a noteworthy performance in his first tournament as a Duck. The redshirt freshman from San Francisco, carded a 2-under 70, which was tied for fourth with Lieber following Monday's morning round. But the wheels came off in the afternoon session as Sica blew up with an 81. Oregon junior Chris Heniff put together a pair of career-best rounds, going 75-74 to stand tied for 32nd at 5-over.

Defending champion Anthony Arvidson of Oregon State struggled with a 76 in the morning, but rebounded with a 70 in the afternoon to stand tied for 12th at 2-over. The Beavers were tied for 11th with Hawaii in the team competition at 604, 28 strokes behind San Diego State.

The final round of the Oregon Duck Invitational begins with a shotgun start Tuesday morning at 8 a.m.
