March 26, 2001

FRESNO, CA - The No. 11-ranked California women's tennis team (12-2, 4-2 Pac-10) defeated No. 14 Fresno State, 6-1, today at the Spalding G. Wathen Tennis Center in Fresno, CA. The Bulldogs only managed one singles point in their loss to the Bears, who now have solidified an undefeated record (8-0) during the month of March, including wins in eleven of their last twelve matches.

The Bulldogs fall to 12-3 on the season, as the Bears snapped Fresno State's five match winning streak, while also handing them the first loss of the season at home.

California recorded doubles victories at the No. 2 and No. 3 spots to claim the doubles point and take a 1-0 lead. Fresno State's No. 1 duo of Simone Jardim and Kim Niggemeyer (ranked No. 16 nationally) improved their overall record to 18-2 with an 8-3 win against California's team of Anita Kumeray and Raquel Kops-Jones, who fall to 6-4 in dual match competition.

The Golden Bears then proceeded to clinch the match, garnering wins at five of the six singles spots in the lineup. Each winning spot for the Bears was done so in straight sets, while the Bulldog's senior, Liesl Fichtbauer (ranked No. 41 nationally), notched the only win for the Bulldogs, a 6-2, 4-6, 6-3 triumph over sophomore Christina Fusano at the No. 2 spot. This is Fusano's second straight loss at the spot for the Bears, who suffered only her third loss of the season at the No. 2 spot for Cal. Fresno State's all-american, junior Kim Niggemeyer, lost to Cal's all-american, Anita Kurimay at the No. 1 spot in straight sets, 6-4, 6-2.
