San Diego State Holds Off Washington to Win Duck Invitational by a Stroke

March 27, 2001

EUGENE, Ore. -- San Diego State's John Lieber pared the 18th hole, while Washington's John Robertson bogeyed to give the Aztecs a one-stroke win Tuesday at the 2001 Oregon Duck Invitational, played at the 6,854-yard, par-72 Eugene Country Club. The Aztecs entered the day with an eight stroke lead over the Huskies and gave all of them back until Robertson's bogey.

Playing in a constant rain and drizzle Tuesday morning, only eight players broke par, but the poor weather did not overshadow a brilliant tournament by individual medalist Jeff Wood of UC Santa Barbara. The only golfer to finish at par or better for all three rounds, Wood used his long drives off the tee to fire a 72-67-71 for a 6-under 210 that earned the 6-5, 270-pounder his first collegiate tournament title.

The Gaucho senior sealed the victory with birdies on two if his final four holes and ended the day three strokes better that Colorado State's Martin Laird, who had an even-par 72 Tuesday and finished the tournament at 213.

Oregon started the day just one stroke back of SDSU, but struggled to a 15-over par 303, that left the Ducks 16-over for the tournament, nine strokes behind the Aztecs and eight behind Washington. Oregon managed to hold off Arizona State for third by one stroke, thanks to a strong tournament from Aaron Byers. Despite shooting a 4-over 76 Tuesday, Byers tied for third overall with San Diego State's John Lepak at 214. Byers had a one stroke lead over Wood going into the final round.

A junior from Albany, Ore., Byars fired a personal-best 66 in Monday's opening round, which helped him to his highest finish as a Duck. His previous best was a tie for fifth at the Ping Arizona Intercollegiate in January. John Ellis was the only other Duck in the top 20, tying for 16th at 220 after shooting a 2-over 74 Tuesday.

'The conditions with the weather were certainly tough out there, but it's not like it was any better for Washington or San Diego State,' said Oregon coach Steve Nosler. 'Third is a a lot better than fourth and we certainly competed and gave a good effort out there, but I think we're capable of doing better. We've got a few minor things to iron out before our next tournament, but overall we're still in pretty good shape.'

Oregon senior Matt Genovese tied for 23rd at 223 after a 3-over 75 Tuesday. Duck freshman Jimmy White, playing on the 'B' team, shot an even-par 72 for the best round of his brief collegiate career. The Eugene native and 2000 graduate of South Eugene High School tied for 36th with a 225.

Lepak was one of three Aztecs in the top 20, as teammates Lieber tied for fifth at 215 and Lars Johnson tied for 16th at 220. Washington was the only other school to match that feat with Robertson sixth at 217, Corey Prugh tied for ninth at 219 and Conner Robbins tied for 16th at 220. The Huskies won last year's Duck Invitational by one stroke over Oregon.

Defending individual champion Anthony Arvidson of Oregon State had a 74 Tuesday to finish the tournament tied for 16th at 220. As a team, Oregon State finished 12th with a 905, 34 strokes behind SDSU.

Oregon returns to action April 2-3 at the Western Intercollegiate in Santa Cruz, Calif.
