2001 Team Notes

ARIZONA (19-15, 2-4):Last Week: USC L 0-8, 4-6, 7-8 (10 inn) This Week: Oregon State Sancet Field was not friendly to the Wildcats last weekend. Arizona was swept by USC to put them at 2-4 in Conference games ... Freshman CF Brian Anderson, senior 1B Ernie Durazo and junior DH Justyn St. Clair were the only Wildcats that managed to get on base in the first game of the series. USC pitcher Mark Prior notched 15 Ks in that contest ... Senior 3B Erik Torres had his eight-game hitting streak stopped in that game after an 0-for-4 plate performance. He did well in the second game of the series, going 3-for-4 with two doubles ... Durazo extended his hitting streak to six games before being halted in the second game of the series. He has hit safely in 32 of Arizona's 34 games this season ... As a team, the Wildcats' average fell a few points to .297 ... Freshman RHP Sean Rierson and Senior LHP Rob Elias both picked up their third losses on the season. Each will try to rebound this weekend against Oregon State ... Arizona leads the Conference in several categories including hits (363), triples (15), total bases (527), innings pitched (311.0), saves (11), putouts (933) and assists (362).

ARIZONA STATE (19-7-1, 3-3):Last Week: at Oregon State W 10-2, L 1-4, 2-12 This Week: Stanford

The Sun Devils took one game from Oregon State last weekend in Corvallis. The 10-2 win over the Beavers featured junior LHP Jon Switzer's third career complete game and a strong offensive performance from junior RF Mel Stocker. Switzer improved to 4-0 by allowing only two earned runs on eight hits while striking out 10 batters. Stocker went 2-for-5 on the day with two runs scored and one RBI. He also stole home ... ASU was outscored 16-3 and out-hit 23-13 in the final two games of the series. The losses marked only the second time the Sun Devils have fallen twice in a row this season ... Drew Friedberg has pitched well for ASU. In 10 appearances, the senior lefty has a 0.74 ERA, 3-0 record and has struck out 30 batters in 24.1 innings pitched ... The Sun Devils stand atop several Pac-10 offensive stat categories. ASU leads the Conference in batting with a .351 average, runs scored (272), doubles (68), on base percentage (.453), RBI (243), sacrifice flies (21) and stolen bases (73) ... After two straight Conference series on the road, ASU takes on Stanford at home this weekend.

CALIFORNIA (15-13, 2-4):Last Week: Washington State L 6-8, 6-7, W 10-1 This Week: Pacific, at Washington

The Bears dropped the first two games against Washington State before beating the Cougars 10-1 in the third game of the series. The double-digit win marks the second Sunday in a row, Cal has exploded offensively. Cal knocked in 10 runs on nine hits in the first two innings of that game. Junior LHP Jason Dennis got the win after pitching six innings, allowing no earned runs, on four hits with four strikeouts... The Bears struggled offensively in the first two games, marred by seven errors ... Senior 1B Clint Hoover hit his 33rd career home run, a grand slam during Friday's game. The homer places him fourth on Cal's all-time list ... Freshman LF Brian Horwitz continues on his 23-game hitting streak. His streak is believed to be the longest in Cal history. He has now hit safely in 26 of the 27 games he has played in. He leads the Bears in batting average (.380), doubles (12) and runs scored (22). In the Pac-10, he ranks sixth in batting average, first in doubles, seventh in hits (41) and is tied for eighth in stolen bases (7) ... Freshman 3B Conor Jackson is riding a 10-game hitting streak. Last weekend he went 4-for-11 with four runs scored ... Cal has a midweek game with Pacific before venturing on their first Pac-10 road trip to Washington.

OREGON STATE (18-10, 2-1):Last Week: Arizona State L 2-10, W 4-1, 12-2 This Week: at Arizona

Oregon State fared well against then No. 3-Arizona State, taking the final two games to win the series. It marked the first time the Beavers have taken two from the Sun Devils since 1967 ... Oregon State's first win in the series came behind a strong pitching performance from senior Scott Nicholson. The lefty pitched a complete game six-hitter in the 4-1 victory. He allowed only one run and struck out four batters ... On the weekend, the Beavers were led offensively by junior C Bryan Ingram. Ingram batted .636 (7-for-11), with a triple, three runs

and three RBI. He was awarded his first Pac-10 Player of the Week honor for his efforts ... Oregon State haswon 10 of their last 12 games ... The Beavers play a midweek game at Portland before heading to the desert to take on Arizona.

STANFORD (21-5, 3-0):Last Week: Washington W 9-3, 9-0, 13-4 This Week: at Arizona State

The Cardinal swept Washington in its first Pac-10 series. Stanford has won 19 of its last 21 contests and now stands at 13-1 at Sunken Diamond ... Stanford has beaten the Huskies eight consecutive times dating back to 1999. The series win marks their 14th consecutive regular season series victory dating back to last season ... TheCardinal once again got top pitching performances from sophomore RHP Jeremy Guthrie and junior RHP Jeff Bruksch. Guthrie got the first win of the series after throwing eight innings allowing two earned runs on seven hits while striking out nine. He kept the Huskies scoreless from the second through the seventh innings. Bruksch earned the win in the next game after pitching seven scoreless innings on three hits. He struck out a career-high tying nine batters ... Stanford also got several prolific plate appearances as evidenced by their season-high 16-hit performance in Saturday's 9-0 win ... Junior LF Jason VanMeetren and freshman RF Carlos Quentin led the Cardinal on the weekend. Both players hit .500. VanMeetren went 6-for-12 with six runs scored and four RBI. He added three doubles, a home run and stolen base. Quentin was 7-for-14 with five RBI, a home run and stolen base. He leads the team with a .358 average ... The team is now hitting at a .293 clip ... The Cardinal leads the Pac-10 in pitching (2.77 ERA) and fielding percentage (.978). The next best ERA is Cal's 3.40 ... Stanford continues on in Pac-10 play at Arizona State this weekend.

UCLA (17-7, 1-2):Last Week: Cal State Los Angeles W 9-6, at Cal State Northridge W 5-4 This Week: at San Diego, at WSU

The Bruins went 2-0 last week taking non-conference games from Cal State Los Angeles and Cal State Fullerton ... The Bruins pounded out 14 hits against the Golden Eagles, as every player in the lineup recorded a hit. Seniors, DH Brian Baron (3-for-5), CF Matt Pearl (2-for-4), and juniors LF Adam Berry (2-for-4) and 3B Randall Shelley had multi-hit games ... Against Cal State Northridge, UCLA scored three runs in the final two innings to give them a one-run edge in the win ... Sophomore lefty Mike Kunes picked up his second win after allowing only one hit and one run in 3.1 innings of work ... UCLA ranks third in the Conference in both hitting (.310) and pitching (3.59 ERA). Baron leads the Pac-10 in batting (.517) and on base percentage (.566) ...UCLA is on the road this week, taking on San Diego before heading North to play Washington State.

USC (19-10, 4-2):Last Week: at Arizona W 8-0, 6-4,m 8-7 (10 inn) This Week: at CS Fullerton, San Diego State

USC is coming off a weekend sweep at Arizona. The Trojans are now 19-2 in their last 21 games at Sancet Field. The Trojans have won four games in a row, adding a midweek win against Pepperdine ... Junior RHP Mark Prior was named Louisville Slugger National Player of the Week and Pacific-10 Player of the Week for the second consecutive time for his efforts against the Wildcats. He threw a three-hitter for his second consecutive complete game, shutting out the 'Cats while notching a career-high 15 strikeouts and giving up no free passes. Prior is 6-1 with a 1.36 ERA on the season. In his last four starts he has struck out 52 batters, while allowing only one walk ... Senior SS Seth Davidson set a USC record with his 58th career stolen base. His RBI single in the top of the 10th inning was the game-winner in Sunday's game that sealed the sweep for the Trojans ... As a team, USC has the second-best Conference fielding percentage of .972. They also rank second in walks (126), opposing batting average (.243), innings pitched (263.2) and putouts (791) ... The team leads the Pac-10 in batters struck out (280) ... USC is out of Conference action this week and plays midweek games against Cal State Fullerton and San Diego State.

WASHINGTON (13-7, 2-4):Last Week: WSU (W 8-3, 7-4) at Stanford (L 3-9, 0-9, 4-13) This Week: Puget Sound, California

The injury bug has hit Washington. The Huskies had a tough road trip last weekend after being swept by Stanford and were without the help from starters Marc Rittenhouse, Jefferson Thiel and Sean White ... Senior 2B Rittenhouse will remain out for three to five more weeks after undergoing surgery on a thumb ligament.

Sophomore catcher and Johnny Bench award candidate, Thiel, has not caught a game since Mar. 17 due to a partial tear of an elbow ligament. Sophomore RHP White, was slated as last weekend's third-day starter, butlasted only one inning after feeling pain in his right shoulder ... The bright spots for the Huskies have been replacements, freshman John Otness and junior Tim Rice. Since taking over for Rittenhouse, Otness is 11-for-31 (.355) with no errors in 50 fielding chances. Rice has made five starts at catcher and batted .300 (6-for-20)... Sophomore RHP Scott Robertson has been impressive in the Husky bullpen. The closer has a 1-0 record with four saves. He has allowed only one run in 7.1 innings pitched , while striking out nine ... Washington plays a midweek game against Puget Sound before taking on California at home.

WASHINGTON STATE (10-17, 2-1):Last Week: at Washington (L 3-8, 4-7), at California (W 8-6, 7-6, L 1-10) This Week: UCLA

The Cougars put together a strong showing in their first Pac-10 series, taking two from the Golden Bears in Berkeley. Washington State had dropped two games at Washington earlier in the week ... The Cougars won the first game of the series 8-6, cranking out 16 hits led by junior CF Evan Hecker. Hecker's solid plate performance included four hits with two runs scored. Washington State used three double plays to limit Cal's scoring ... In their second win, junior RHP Justin Cayetano earned his second win after giving up only one earned run on three hits with three strikeouts in seven innings pitched ... Sophomore 1B Stefan Bailie continues to lead the Cougars offensively. His name is marked in several Pac-10 statistical categories including runs scored (9th, 28), slugging percentage (2nd, .714), total bases (5th, 70), RBI (4th, 34) and home runs (3rd, 9) ... Washington State hosts UCLA this weekend in its home opener.
