Women's Gymnastics Advnances to the NCAA Regional Championships

March 27, 2001

BERKELEY - The field for the NCAA West Regional Women's Gymnastics Championship has been announced. California (15-16) will join defending NCAA champion and top-ranked UCLA on Saturday, Apr. 7 along with 11th-ranked BYU, 13th-ranked Oregon State, Boise State and Cal State Fullerton. The meet will take place in Pauley Pavilion starting at 6:00 pm.

In addition, five at-large individual all-around competitors and four at-large individual event specialists will compete. The all-around qualifiers are Dani Albright, Shirla Choy and Kimmy Cianci of San Jose State and Flora Bare and Ericka Ruelas of UC Davis. Event specialists are Alison Siegel of Seattle Pacific (vault), Toni Peterson of Sacramento State (uneven bars), Cassie Althauser of Seattle Pacific (balance beam) and Jami Scoville of Sacramento State (floor exercise).

The top two teams and the top two all-around competitors not from an advancing team from the regional will receive a berth in the NCAA Championships, which will be held in Athens, GA, Apr. 19-21. In addition, individual event winners not from a qualifying team or all-arounder will advance if their score is 9.8 or higher.

The Bears return to the NCAA Regional Championships, as a team, after a two-year absence. In 1998, Cal took sixth place in the West Regionals totaling a team score of 190.600. In 27 years of the program's existence, the women's gymnastics squad has advanced past the regionals to the NCAA Championships just once as a team (1992), while sending individual performers to the elite event on six different occasions.

This season, Cal has squared off against four of the five opponents it faces in Los Angeles. The Bears are 1-3 against those teams and versus the lone squad (BYU) that Cal did not face in 2001, the Bears have a 1-0 all-time series edge.

Tickets for the regional championships can be purchased at UCLA's Central Ticket Office, (310) UCLA-WIN and online at www.tickets.ucla.edu. Reserved tickets are $9 for adults and $7 for youth (16 and under). General admission prices are $6 for adults and $4 for youth.
