Men's Tennis Hosts California And No. 6 Stanford

ON TAP: The Arizona State men's tennis team (8-6, 2-1 Pacific-10) will continue their six match home stand as they host California (7-4, 1-2 Pac-10) on Friday, March 30 at 1:30 p.m. and sixth-ranked Stanford (9-1, 2-0 Pac-10) on Saturday at 12:00 p.m. Even though both duals are against Pac-10 teams, the records will not count towards the overall standings.
A LOOK BACK: Behind four consecutive singles wins, ASU upset 12th-ranked Auburn, 4-3. Arizona State fell behind 0-2 in the dual before stringing together four singles wins on the No. 2, 4, 5 and 6 courts to claim its largest upset over a ranked opponent since ASU knocked off fifth-ranked UCLA, 4-3, in 1999. Auburn gained the early edge by claiming two of the three doubles matches for the first point. ASU did pick up a victory on the No. 3 court where Mitchell Bowen and Olivier Charroin won 8-5. In single play, Auburn claimed the second point on the No. 3 court, however, the Sun Devils stormed back and won on the second and sixth courts to tie the dual a two apiece. Matt Klinger and Jarrod Eckermann won in straight sets on the No. 2 and 6 courts respectively. ASU took the lead on the fifth court when Charroin came back from a set down to win, 4-6, 6-3, 6-0. Mirza Duranovic then claimed the dual and ASU's fourth win on the No. 4 court where he also came back from a set down to win, 3-6, 6-2, 6-0.
SUN DEVILS IN THE RANKINGS: Senior Nic Dubey is ranked 57th in the country, while junior Matt Klinger is 95th. The next team ranking will be released on April 4, while the singles and doubles rankings will be released on April 6.
HEAD COACH LOU BELKEN: In his 19th season as head coach, Lou Belken has produced 14 All-Americans, including NCAA singles champion and ATP professional Sargis Sargsian. Belken, the 1999 Pacific-10 Conference Coach of the Year and Region VIII Coach of the Year, has guided the Sun Devils to NCAA postseason berths in nine of the last 13 seasons, including a berth into the NCAA round of 16 in 1999.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS: Senior Nic Dubey and junior Mirza Duranovic each achieved their 80th career singles victory against LMU ... junior Matt Klinger holds a .716 career winning percentage in singles, recording a 58-23 mark ... this is Duranovic's third straight year of reaching at least 20 wins ... four of ASU's six losses have been by just one point ... Pim Van Mele leads the team in Pac-10 victories with a 4-1 record ... the dual against sixth-ranked Stanford will be ASU's eighth dual against a top-25 team this year.
HOME SWEET HOME: Over the past four seasons, including an 8-2 record this year, Arizona State holds a 59-22 (.728) overall dual record at the Whiteman Tennis Center, the Sun Devils will host four more home matches in 2001.
