March 28, 2001
MORAGA, Calif - The University of Oregon softball team (22-17) split a double header with St. Mary's College Wednesday, winning the second game 3-2 after falling 6-5 in nine innings in Game 1. It was the final preseason game for Oregon, which opens Pac-10 play at home Friday against No. 2 Arizona.
'Right now we've got to focus on being prepared for conference play,' Oregon head coach Rick Gamez said. 'We know what it's going to take to be successful and we've got to be mentally prepared for every game.'
After a 6-5 loss in nine innings in the first game, Oregon scored two runs in the top of the first inning in Game 2 to take an early lead. Oregon pitcher Lisa Wangler held the Gaels scoreless through three innings and struck out four. Sophomore Andrea Vidlund came in for Wangler in the fourth inning to pick up the win and improve to 9-3 on the season.
St. Mary's responded to the pitching change by scoring two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. Both teams were held scoreless in the fifth inning, but Oregon scored the winning run in the sixth. Vidlund singled to right field and sophomore Janell Bergstrom followed with a double to right center field that scored Vidlund to give Oregon the 3-2 win.
In Game 1, junior pitcher Connie McMurren (8-8) picked up the loss for Oregon. The Ducks scored five runs in the first five innings and were leading 5-0 before St. Mary's responded in the bottom of the fifth inning. The Gaels scored five runs on five hits - their only hits of the game. In the bottom of the ninth, St. Mary's scored on a throwing error to get the 6-5 victory.
Junior Missy Coe and senior Triwan Custer each homered in Game 1 to bring their career home run totals to 21 and 31, respectively. Custer is just two home runs shy of the Oregon record (33) set by Jill Robinson (1997-2000).
The Ducks host the Arizona schools this weekend beginning with No. 2 Arizona Friday at 2 p.m. at Howe Field. Oregon will then host Arizona State Saturday at 2 p.m. and Sunday at 1 p.m.
