Beavers Drop Series Opener

March 30, 2001

TUCSON, Ariz. - Oregon State's Thad Johnson struck out a season-high seven hitters but the Beavers squandered scoring opportunities Friday night in a 5-2 loss to Arizona in Pacific-10 baseball at Sancet Field. OSU (18-11 overall, 2-2 Pac-10) lost for just the third time in its last 13 games.

The Beavers and Wildcats (20-15, 3-4) resume their series Saturday at 12 noon PST and then conclude it Sunday at 1 p.m. PDT. Both games can be heard on KLOO-AM (1340).

On Friday, Johnson had one of his better outings in recent weeks but took the loss as OSU couldn't come up with a hit at key moments. The Beavers left 10 runners on base, seven of those were in scoring position.

'We couldn't create opportunities for ourselves offensively,' OSU coach Pat Casey said. 'Thad threw well and we played excellent defense, but we just couldn't sustain anything (at the plate) - get people on base and force the action.'

After Arizona reached Johnson for a pair of runs on three hits in the second inning, the Beavers played catch-up the rest of the night. OSU was within 3-2 in the top of the eighth inning when it had its best chance at tying or taking the lead against Wildcat righthander Marc Kaiser.

With one out, Curtis Davis singled and Kerisi Reynolds pinch ran, he moved to second on a single by Chris Biles and a walk to Will Hudson loaded the bases. Jason McBride - batting .371 on the season - pinch-hit for Stephen Copeland, he grounded into an inning-ending double play.

Kaiser, a freshman, went on to pitch Arizona's first complete game of the season. A third-round draft pick of the Cincinnati Reds out of high school, he walked four and struck out four in throwing an eight-hitter.

Johnson nearly matched Kaiser, lasting 7 2/3 innings and allowing 10 hits and two walks while striking out seven. It was the second-highest strikeout total for the senior righthander in his OSU career, topped only by the nine he fanned in beating Cal State-Northridge last March.

After giving up the two second-inning runs, Johnson allowed just one run on four hits over the next five innings. In the eighth, Ernie Durazo reached on an error and Matt Abram's subsequent two-run homer made it 5-2.

Biles was 3-for-4 for the Beavers and Bryan Ingram was 2-for-5, extending his hitting streak to seven games. Curtis Davis was 2-for-3 and was hit by a pitch, it was the 10th time this spring Davis has been hit, just two shy of the school record for a season.
