No. 2 Wildcats Too Much For Oregon In Softball Opener
March 30, 2001
EUGENE - The University of Oregon softball team opened Pac-10 play with an 11-1 loss to No. 2 Arizona in front of 331 fans at Howe Field Friday. The Ducks are 22-18, 0-1 Pac-10 and the Wildcats improve to 37-2, 1-0.
'Hopefully opening the season against a tough team like Arizona will help us prepare for each game,' Oregon head coach Rick Gamez said. 'The conference is strong all the way through and now we know what we need to do to compete in every game.'
Third baseman Lynsey Haij was the Ducks' main source of offense, finishing the day 2-for-3. Sophomore Andrea Vidlund tallied the Ducks' only other hit, a solo home run in the bottom of the seventh inning. It is Vidlund's third home run of the season and her fourth career shot.
Defensively, junior pitcher Connie McMurren (8-9) picked up the loss for Oregon.
The Wildcats struck early when first baseman Jennie Finch hit a grand slam in the first inning to give Arizona a 4-0 lead. Finch played a role in all of Arizona's scoring, hitting a two-run double in the third inning and a three-run home run in the seventh that put Arizona up 11-0. Finch finished the day 3-for-3 with two runs scored and nine RBI.
Vidlund's home run in the bottom of the seventh prevented the shut out for Arizona.
