No. 3 Softball Falls To No. 15 Washington In Pac-10 Opener
March 30, 2001
BERKELEY, CA - The No.15 Washington Huskies knocked off the No. 3 California Golden Bears to open Pac-10 play at Levine-Fricke Field, 2-0. With the win, the Huskies improve to 23-11 overall and 1-0 in the Pac-10, while the Bears fall to 39-2 overall and 0-1 in conference.
The Huskies jumped out with an early lead in the first inning when left fielder Kelly Hauxhurst homered to right-center field, giving Washington a 1-0 advantage.
Becky Simpson gave the Huskies an insurance run in the third, when she led off the inning with a blast over the right field fence to give Washington a 2-0 lead.
Cal's senior Paige Bowie broke up the Huskies' Tia Bollinger no hitter in the fifth with a line-drive single to right field, but would get no further than first base in the inning.
Cal tried to mount a comeback in the bottom of the seventh, as Bowie, with two outs, got her second hit on the day to right field. Sophomore Courtney Scott followed with an infield single to the shortstop, but the rally would end there with the final, 2-0.
Bollinger improves to 21-2 on the year, pitching her 16 complete game in 2001 with four strikeouts in the game.
Junior Jocelyn Forest took the loss for the Bears, going the distance while allowing two Husky runs and seven hits with 12 strikeouts.
The Bears return to action tomorrow as they battle the No. 1 UCLA Bruins at 2 p.m and then wrap-up the weekend versus the same Bruins on Sunday at 1 p.m.
