Cal Holds Down Husky Offense In 5-2 Loss

SEATTLE - Three California pitchers, led by starter Jason Dennis, kept the Washington offense incheck Saturday as the Golden Bears handed the Huskies their fifth straight conference loss,5-2, at Husky Ballpark.

Dennis (3-1), a junior southpaw, held the Huskies to two runs on six hits and no walksthrough seven innings to pick up the victory. It was the longest outing of the year forDennis, who red-shirted last season after elbow surgery. David Cash pitched an inning andthird of shutout relief, and Matt Brown struck out the final two Huskies with the basesloaded in the ninth to record his sixth save.

Washington fell to 14-9 overall and 2-6 in the Pac-10 with the loss. Cal improved to 17-14, 4-4.

Up 2-0, Cal scored three runs in the fifth to take a 5-0 lead. John Baker singled to lead offthat inning, moved to second on a groundout and scored on a Clint Hoover single. AfterHoover stole second and Conor Jackson walked, a passed ball put runners at second andthird. A sacrifice fly from Carson White plated Hoover and Jackson scored on a SpencerWyman single.

Washington scored both of its runs in the sixth. Ben Miller singled to lead off and scoredon Tila Reynolds' double. After moving to third on a groundout, Reynolds scored on awild pitch. In the ninth, singles from Reynolds, Jay Garthwaite and Michael Done loadedthe bases, but Brown fanned Bryan Johnson and John Otness to end the game.

Husky junior starter Zack Daniels fell to 2-1 with the loss. Junior Randy Vanderplowpitched four and one-third innings of shutout relief. Miller and Garthwaite each had twohits to pace the Huskies. Baker and right fielder Rob Meyer were the only Bears with twohits.

The Huskies will try to salvage a series split Sunday in a 1:00 p.m. game, which will airlive in the Seattle area on KSRB AM-1150.
