Etter Throws NCAA Provisional Discus Mark

April 1, 2001

STANFORD, Calif. - The University of Oregon women's track and field closed action at the Stanford Invitational Sunday with several strong early-season marks.

Notching her first NCAA provisional mark of the year, All-America sophomore Mary Etter took runner-up honors in the discus (168-4) - her best mark of the season and not far off her personal best from last season's Pac-10 meet (173-11). Redshirt senior Maureen Morrison raised her season best in the same event (fifth, 156-8) to give Oregon its second Pac-10 qualifier in the event.

'I was pretty happy how it turned out,' Etter said. 'I had three throws past 160 feet, so it was a good series. I was a little surprised, too, because I usually don't do well in all three events (discus, shot put and hammer) at the same meet, so I thought it might effect my discus today.'

Etter also added eighth place in the hammer (170-6), just behind Morrison (seventh, 177-1) - both of which were season bests. Sophomore Jordan McDaniels followed in 16th place (150-7).

Freshman Ann Sullivan continued to pace the team in the 100 hurdles, lowering her personal best in Sunday's final to 14.16 - her previous best was a 14.19 clocking from her junior high school season. Sunday's clocking came after a faster, albeit wind-aided qualifying time of 13.99 (wind: +2.5).

'After yesterday's race, I was hoping to go faster, but a few things distracted me before the race,' Sullivan said, 'so I wasn't focused as I should have been. Still, it was good to get good races on back-to-back days, and it shows I can take it to a new level. Especially, if I can improve my lead and trail leg speed over the hurdle.'

Other solid marks came courtesy of freshman Annette Mosey (800 `B', 4th, 2:12.45), sophomores Janette Davis (400, 10th, 57.23) and Erinn Gulbrandsen (1,500, 14th, 14:41.02), junior Cameo Davis (400 hurdles `B', 10th, 1:02.62) and the 4x400 relay (11th, 3:54.46).

On the men's side, the Ducks entered two athletes in the multiple sections of the 1,500. Senior Michael Kasahun ranked 30th overall (3:54.34) in the invitational portion, and redshirt senior Lincoln Nehring ranked 19th in the `B' sections (4:00.01).

Looking ahead, the women's team takes a week off from competition, then returns to action at home Saturday, April 14 in a dual meet with the men versus Washington. This week, the men's team will send a corps of decathletes and field and sprint specialists to the Texas Relays, Wed.-Sat., April 4-7.
