No. 14 Ranked Softball Drops Game With No. 2 Arizona, 5-0
April 1, 2001
SALEM,Ore. - Jennie Finch's no-hitter helped lead No. 2 ranked Arizona to a 5-0 victory against No. 14 Oregon State in Sunday's Pac-10 Conference softball match-up at Wallace Marine Sports Park in Salem.
The Beavers and Wildcats completed just one game in the scheduled double-header because of poor field conditions. It will be determined at a later date if the squads will re-schedule the rained out game.
With the loss, OSU falls to 29-13-1 overall and 0-2 in conference action, while Arizona improves its record to 38-2 and 2-0 in the Pac-10.
Arizona started the game with a big first inning. Back-to-back singles by Lauren Bauer and Nicole Giordano sent Toni Mascarenas to the plate with a pair of runners on base and no outs. Mascarenas belted a three-run homer to centerfield to put the Wildcats on the board.
Freshman Monica Hoffman (11-6) was on the mound for the Beavers and allowed just three more hits on the day after facing the first three batters of the contest. Hoffman finished with eight strikeouts.
'Monica (Hoffman) threw well, especially after the first inning,' commented OSU head coach Kirk Walker. 'Arizona just took advantage of a few bad pitches.'
Arizona added two more runs in the seventh behind a two-run homer by Bauer.
OSU was unable to get things going offensively, as Finch struck out 10 batters while walking just two en route to her no-hitter.
'Finch threw a good game,' said Walker. 'We made adjustments throughout the game but it wasn't enough to make a difference offensively.'
The Beavers return to action Thursday when they travel to Saint Mary's College for a non-conference tilt against the Gaels. First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m.
