Men's Tennis Defeats Utah, 6-1
April 3, 2001
BERKELEY, CA - The No. 30 ranked Cal men's tennis team (9-5, 1-1 Pac-10) pick up an easy victory today at the Hellman Tennis Courts by knocking off the Utah Utes (8-10, 1-4 Moutain West Conference) in a near shutout, 6-1.
To start the day off, the Bears swept the doubles competition for only the third time this season. The duo of John Paul Fruttero and Robert Kowalczyk, who had previously only competed at the No. 2 spot as a tandem, took control of the No. 1 spot today, making quick work of David Mercier/Nicholas Yip, 8-5. The dynamic duo of freshman Balazs Veress and sophomore Ben Miles continued their mastery of doubles, improving their dual match record to 8-0, defeating Utah's duo, 8-5, after also being bumped up the lineup to the No. 2 spot for the first time.
In singles, each spot was dominated by Cal players, as each of the five singles wins came in straight sets. Adrian Barnes, who normally plays No. 3, pulled out of competition with minor shoulder pains. The pains increased during his doubles match, as Barnes' spot was taken by Kowalczyk, who defeated Utah's Corrie Sheepers handily, 6-3, 6-2. With the absence of Barnes, freshman Wayne Wong got the call to compete at the No. 5 spot, where he took the match, 6-4, 7-5. Fruttero held down No. 1, easily defeating David Mercier, 6-4, 6-2, while notching his 20th overall win on the season.
Erik Dmytruk was the last Bear standing as he came back in the third set, to overcome a 5-2 deficit, in order to tie the match and send it into a third-set tie break. Dmytruk traded points with Utah's Nicholas Yip, however, Yip would prove the victor, as he ended the Bears chances of recording their first shutout of the season by defeating Dmytruk, 2-6, 7-6, 7-6(6).
The Bears will head to Los Angeles to take on No. 21 USC, Friday, April 6, before taking on No. 1 UCLA, Saturday at 12 noon.
