April 4, 2001

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. -- Former Oregon basketball player Bill Simmons has been named to the San Francisco Prep Hall of Fame. Simmons played for the Ducks from 1960-62 and was a member of Oregon's 1960 and 1961 NCAA Tournament teams.

Simmons prepped at San Francisco's Polytechnic High School from 1954-57, where he starred in basketball and baseball and led the Parrots to the AAA state title in 1957. He played at City College of San Francisco in 1958 before transferring to Oregon.

He was a member of the Ducks' 1960 NCAA Tournament team that defeated New Mexico State and Utah before falling to California in the regional final, to finish the season 19-10. That team, which won the most games since 1945, was inducted into the Oregon Athletic Hall of Fame in 1997. Simmons was a starter for Oregon during the 1961 and 1962 seasons.

Simmons now lives in Portland with his wife Bonnie. They have two grown children, Christopher and Melissa, and one grandchild.
