Student-Athletes of the Week (April 2) Announced

Corvallis, Ore. - Pitcher Scott Nicholson and golfer Stacie Ferguson have been named Oregon State's Athletes of the Week for their performances in competition during the week of March 26 to April 1, it was announced Thursday.

Nicholson, a senior lefthander from Longview, Wash., pitched a five-hit shutout against Arizona at Tucson last Saturday as the beavers downed the Wildcats 8-0. Nicholson threw just 82 pitches as he walked none and struck out four.

It was Nicholson's third straight complete game and his second shutout in those three games (he also blanked Minnesota on March 17). Nicholson improved his record to 6-1 and lowered his earned run average to 2.90 with the win. Nicholson was also named the Pac-10 Baseball Pitcher of the Week.

Ferguson, a sophomore from Canyon Del Oro High School in Tucson, Arizona, finished a career-best eighth at the Dr. Thompson Rainbow Tournament last week. She fired an eight over par 224 on the Olomana Golf Course in Hawaii. She shot a career-best 70, two under par, on the first day of the tournament.

She has played in all eight tournaments for OSU this year, averaging 79.0 strokes per round.

OSU NAMES OLSSON, DEACON ACADEMIC ATHLETES OF THE WEEK

Carina Olsson, senior golfer, and junior golfer Todd Deacon were named Oregon State's academic student-athletes of the week for March 26-April 1, it was announced Thursday.

Olsson hails from Sollentua, Sweden. She currently has a 3.90 overall GPA in electrical engineering.

Deacon is from Saguaro High School in Scottsdale, AZ. Deacon carries an overall GPA of 3.24 in business administration, plus he is vice president of the OSU student-athlete advisory committee. Deacon tied for 23rd at the Duck Invitational Golf Tournament on March 26-27.
