Baseball Opens Pac-10 Series With 11-2 Win Against Arizona State
LOS ANGELES -- Mark Prior allowed one run on seven hits while Bill Peavey went 2-for-3 with a home run and three RBI Friday and the No. 12 USC Trojans opened their Pac-10 Conference series against No. 10 Arizona State with an 11-2 win at Dedeaux Field. With the win, Prior (9-1) recorded his fourth straight victory.
The Trojans (22-11, 5-2) broke open the game with five runs in the third inning. Anthony Lunetta hit a two-run double to right and Seth Davidson capped the rally with an RBI single to right as USC chased Arizona State starter Ryan Schroyer (2-2).
Prior lowered his earned-run-average to 1.34 on the season and has struck out 109 batters while walking only 10 in 73 2/3 innings.
The Sun Devils (21-10-1, 4-6) tied an NCAA record with their 349th consecutive game without being shut out and will look to break the record in tomorrow's contest.
Peavey opened the sixth with a solo shot to right, his fifth home run of the season. The Trojans added two more in the eighth to complete the scoring. Jeremy West hit his sixth home run of the season for Arizona State with a solo shot to left off reliever Brian Bannister.
USC took advantage of inconsistent pitching as Arizona State walked five and plunked five batters on the evening.
The series between both teams will resume tomorrow at 1 p.m., weather permitting. Rik Currier is the scheduled starter for USC while Jon Switzer will throw for Arizona State in Saturday's contest. The series finale will take place on Sunday (April 8), also at 1 p.m. Games will be broadcast live on the Internet at www.usctrojans.com.
