Johnson Fans 14 In OSU Baseball Victory

April 6, 2001

CORVALLIS, Ore. - Chris Biles singled home the winning run in the bottom of the ninth inning as Oregon State beat California 6-5 in Pacific-10 baseball Friday afternoon at Goss Stadium at Coleman Field. Thad Johnson had a career-high 14 strikeouts and pitched an eight-hitter for the Beavers (20-12 overall, 4-3 Pacific-10), who have won 12 of their last 16 games.

OSU and California (19-15, 5-5) continue their series Saturday at 1 p.m. and wrap it up Sunday at 1 p.m. Both games can be heard on KLOO-AM (1340).

On Friday, both Biles and Johnson came back from rough moments to deliver for the Beavers. Biles grounded the game-winning single up the middle with two out after he'd bounced into a double play two innings earlier, Johnson shut down the Golden Bears after committing an error contributing to two unearned runs in the fifth inning to let Cal back in the game.

'I thought Thad was very good,' OSU coach Pat Casey said after the senior righthander pitched scoreless ball for the final 3 2/3 innings. 'I thought it was big the way he came back after the inning when nothing went right for him. He got back on track in the seventh, eighth and ninth innings and was very, very good.'

Johnson's miscue came in the fifth inning, when Cal scored three times to get back within 5-4. Two singles and an error loaded the bases, then John Baker's groundout scored a run and Johnson fanned Brian Horwitz for the second out.

Clint Hoover than drove a ball back up the middle that struck Johnson's shoe and bounced into his chin. Johnson tracked the ball down but threw wildly past first baseman Andy Jarvis, another run to scored to make it 5-4.

Cal tied the game on Rob Meyer's solo homer with one out in the sixth inning, but Johnson allowed only one hit the rest of the way.

'I felt pretty good today,' Johnson said. 'I was throwing to locations, and that's how the strikeouts came. I'm not a power pitcher. This shows you don't have to throw 100 mph to strike people out or throw complete games.'

Johnson's previous career-high had been nine strikeouts against Cal State-Northridge in 2000. On Friday, he had eight strikeouts by the end of the fourth inning, then he finished up with five more over the last three innings.

'As the game goes on, I usually get stronger,' said Johnson, who improved his record to 4-4. 'When I get myself deep into a game, I usually pitch better. By the ninth inning, all my pitches felt like they were working.'

The Beavers, meanwhile, were trying to get Johnson that final run after Bear starter Trevor Hutchinson and reliever David Cash blanked OSU from the fifth through eighth innings. In the ninth, Oregon State got one-out singles by Josh Carter and Andy Jarvis and they advanced to second and third on a two-out wild pitch, Biles then grounded a one-ball, two-strike pitch from Cash into centerfield to end the game.

'You hope you get up in that situation a lot, then you hope that when you do, you come through,' said Biles, who is 10-for-16 in OSU's last four games. Biles was 2-for-4 on Friday, Jarvis was 3-for-5 with a homer, a double and two runs batted in, Eric Stark was 2-for-5 with a pair of doubles, Bryan Ingram extended his hitting streak to 10 games, and Curtis Davis, Kerisi Reynolds and Carter all added two hits each.

Oregon State finished with 16 hits, the ninth time this season the Beavers have had 15 or more hits and the 22nd time they've had 10 or more hits. Of Friday's hits, 13 were off Hutchinson in his seven innings of work.

The Beavers went up 3-0 in the second inning as Will Hudson and Ingram had run-scoring singles and Stark drove in a run with a double. Jarvis drove his solo homer to center to start the third inning, the added an RBI double in the fourth as Oregon State built a 5-1 lead.
