Stanford Upsets No. 1 UCLA, 4-3
April 6, 2001
Los Angeles, CA -- The top-ranked UCLA Bruins tennis team's dream of an undefeated season came to an abrupt end but not without a valiant effort. The Bruins were competing without the services of two of their top players. No. 1 singles player Jean-Julien Rojer is in Uraguary representing the Netherlands-Antilles in the Davis Cup and will be competing this weekend. Freshman Tobias Clemens, who plays at No. 2 and No. 3, is still recovering from an ankle injury he sustained earlier this season against USC.
Stanford took two-out of three doubles matches to earn the first point of the match. The Bruins only win came at No. 3, as the team of Erfan Djahangiri and Lassi Ketola defeated Ali Ansari and Scotty Scott, 8-4. The Cardinal claimed the doubles point at No. 1 after battling back from one game down to even the score at four and went ahead 6-5. The team of Marcin Matkowski and Travis Rettenmaier came back to even the score at six, but could not overtake the duo of Alex Kim and K.J. Hippensteel who went on to a 8-6 victory.
The Bruins bounced back in singles and took the first two matches. Rettenmaier downed David Martin in straight sets by identical scores of 6-1 at No. 5, while Djahangiri took care of Ryan Haviland on court No. 3 in straight sets, 6-1, 6-2. Stanford evened the match at two after Ansari defeated Chris Sands, 6-3, 6-2. The Bruins took a 3-2 lead after Ketola upended Scott, 6-4, 6-2, but Stanford rebounded tying the score at three after Alex Kim defeated Jean-Noel Grinda, 6-4, 6-4. The match would be decided at court No. 3 as Matkowski forced a third set after dropping the first set, 6-4. Despite a great effort, Matkowski could not pull out the victory and fell to No. 19 Hippensteel, 6-4, 3-6, 6-2.
UCLA returns to action tomorrow (April 7) in a match against No. 30 California at the LA Tennis Center. The match is scheduled to begin at noon.
