Beavers Batter California 10-1

April 7, 2001

CORVALLIS, Ore. - Scott Nicholson pitched a seven-hitter and Oregon State came up with 16 hits of its own in a 10-1 win over California in Pacific-10 baseball Saturday afternoon at Goss Stadium at Coleman Field. OSU (21-12 overall, 5-3 Pacific-10) moved to nine games over .500 for the first time this season, the Beavers have won 13 of their last 17 games.

Oregon State and California (19-16, 5-6) conclude their series Sunday at 12 noon, the start time for that game has been moved up one hour to accomodate the Golden Bears' travel plans. The game can be heard on KLOO-AM (1340).

On Saturday, Nicholson pitched his fourth straight complete game to improve his record to 7-1 and lower his earned run average to 2.68. In those four games, Nicholson is 4-0 with a 0.50 ERA and is averaging 5.5 hits, 1.5 walks and 4.8 strikeouts per game.

'Early in the game, he wasn't as sharp as he'd been at Arizona,' said OSU catcher Brian Ingram, recalling Nicholson's 82-pitch shutout a week earlier. 'But any time you do that, it's tough to top it. Early, he might have been a little off-tempo because of the rain delay (in the first inning).'

Nicholson allowed a pair of hits in the first inning, then three in the third as the Golden Bears got within 2-1 on Jeff Dragicevich's double and Carson White's run-scoring single. That ended Nicholson's 15-inning scoreless streak, but he allowed just two hits and one walk over the final six innings. Nicholson walked one and struck out three in his sixth complete game of the season.

Meanwhile, Oregon State was pulling away to improve its home record to 12-4 this season. In the fourth inning, Ingram, drove a two-run homer over the back fence in leftfield to make it 4-1 against Cal starter Jason Dennis.

Will Hudson added a run-scoring single in the fifth and Jason McBride a run-scoring double in the seventh inning. Josh Carter's two-run double and Andy Jarvis' two-run homer in the eighth inning off reliever Blake Read completed the scoring.

Jarvis' homer was his second in as many days and gives him 11 on the year, tying him for eighth place on OSU's all-time list of single-season leaders with Chris Newman (1983), Joe Gerber (1998) and Zach Gordon (2000). Carter's double was the 35th of his career, tying him for fourth place on OSU's all-time list with Troy Schader (1997-99).

The Beavers had at least 10 hits for the 23rd time this season, and had at least 15 hits for the 10th time this spring. In its last four games, OSU is averaging 14.8 hits per game.

'It seems to be like a fire on the team,' said Ingram, who was 3-for-4 with a home run. 'Right now, we've got a mentality that we're hungry for a `W' (win), and we're trying to take that attitude wherever we go.'

Ingram extended his hitting streak to 11 games, during that time, he's batting .475 (19-for-40).

'It's just one of those things,' Ingram said. 'The ball looks like a watermelon right now when it's coming up there ... I'm just seeing the ball well and recognizing what's coming. And you have to give a lot of credit to the hitters behind me (in the lineup) - they're allowing me to see those pitches.'

Hudson was 3-for-5 for OSU, Carter was 2-for-5 with a double and three runs batted in, Eric Stark was 2-for-5 with a double, Jarvis was 2-for-5 with a homer, and Barden was 2-for-4.
