Cal Men's Crew Wins Four Heats On Saturday

April 7, 2001

The No. 1-ranked Cal men's varsity eight advanced to the Grand Final of the Copley Cup event at the San Diego Crew Classic, April 7 on Mission Bay. The Bears are two-time defending champions at the Crew Classic and are coming off back-to-back undefeated national championships season.

'The crews advanced to the finals and were pleased with the progression,' said coach Steve Gladstone. 'They handled the conditions well.'The varsity eight took the early lead and raced in front of the pack for most of the 2000 meter race. Across the finish Cal clocked the fastest time of the day, 5:43.17, one boat-length ahead of Penn. Yale finished third to take the third qualifying spot in Heat A. Washington, Wisconsin and Oregon State advanced from Heat B.

The next men's race to get off the line was the freshman eight. The Bears rowed long and strong down the course and were unchallenged for most of the way. The frosh's winning time of 6:05.00 was fastest time recorded among the three heats in the Men's Collegiate Novice event.Shortly after the freshman event, the course was hammered by wind and rain that forced the suspension of racing for nearly six hours.

The men's JV event finally got underway at 4:10 p.m. and Cal established a boat-length lead by the 500m-mark and extended over second-place Penn through the finish. They will go head to head with Washington in tomorrow's final. The Bears fourth eight to race, a mix of 3rd varsity and 2nd frosh oarsmen, put a great race together in the men's open event and defeated the Hooter's Rowing Club's entry that included six Sydney Olympians. The competition in Sunday's Borthwick Cup should be interesting.
