Cougars End First Week Of Spring Practices With Scrimmage

PULLMAN, Wash. - Washington State concluded its first week of spring drills with a 90 minute scrimmage Saturday morning.

Head coach Mike Price was optimistic about what he saw on both sides of the ball.

'I was pleased with the whole scrimmage, with the defense, with the offense and with the kicking game,' Price said. 'I was real happy with the first string defense, they played very hard. They have a swagger, an attitude and I like it.'

The defense picked off two passes in the scrimmage as well as blocking a punt and a field goal. Marcus Trufant grabbed an interception in the endzone and blocked a 42 yard field goal attempt by Adam Holiday.

The rushing game was led by Dave Minnich who scored the first three touchdowns of the scrimmage. In the Cougar's first scoring drive Minnich caught a 44-yard pass from Jason Gesserto bring the ball to the one-yard line before rushing it in for the touchdown in the next play. Minnich's second trip to the endzone was led to by a 43 yard rush which put the Cougar's in scoring position. Minnich finished the morning with three touchdowns, 83 rushing yards and 44 receiving yards.

'I like our offensive line,' Price said, 'I like what we're doing, I like the kind of plays that we have designed.'

In the quarterback battle it was Gesser who stood out, completing six of nine attempts for 119 yards.

Nakoa McElrath led the receivers with 44 yards on two catches. Collin Henderson caught three passes for 27 yards.

Outside of the one blocked punt, Alan Cox averaged over 50 yards on four punts. Holiday, the jaycee transfer who enrolled at WSU in January, wrapped up the scrimmage making a 33-yard field goal.

Injury report: Derrick Roche (mild concussion) will be back Saturday, Fred Shavies (knee bruise) will be out one to two weeks, Virgil Williams (toe) will be out one to two weeks. Out for the duration ofspring drills is Tomasi Kongaika (knee) with a ruptured retnaculam, rehab is expected to take three months.

Ticket Renewal Forms: Renewal forms for Washington State University season football ticket holders have been mailed and should reach Cougar fans next week. WSU is adding luxury seating areas for the 2001 season as well as Cougar Fan Fair, where a season pass or individual game pass gives the holder access to a tent party featuring live music, plus catered food and beverage service.
