Men's Tennis Sweeps L.A.

April 7, 2001

LOS ANGELES, Calif. - The sixth-ranked Stanford University men's tennis team (15-1 overall, 4-0 Pac-10) completed a crucial Southern California sweep with a 4-2 Pacific-10 Conference win at 20th-ranked USC (11-6, 1-4) on Saturday afternoon at the Marks Tennis Center. On Friday, the Cardinal upset top-ranked UCLA (16-1, 3-1) 4-3.

The match was delayed nearly two-and-a-half hours due to rain, forcing the teams to eliminate doubles play and count only six singles matches.

The Cardinal began play with quick victories from senior Ali Ansari (Houston, TX/Second Baptist HS) and Scott Lipsky (Merrick, NY/Bellmore-Kennedy HS). Ansari beat Parker Collins 6-4, 6-1 at No. 5, while Lipsky handled Garrett Wong 6-2, 6-0 at No. 6.

Stanford then took a 3-0 advantage following the No.1 singles match between the Cardinal's Alex Kim (Potomac, MD/Winston Churchill HS) and 13th-ranked Andrew Park. The second-ranked Kim edged Park in the first set 7-5, but Park returned to take a 5-0 lead in the second set before suffering a sprained ankle which forced him to retire and give Stanford a 3-0 advantage.

USC cut the advantage to 3-2 before K.J. Hippensteel (Roanoke, VA/International Academy) closed the match out at No. 2 singles. USC's Ryan Moore earned the early advantage with a 6-1 win in the first set and a 3-0 advantage in the second. The 22nd-ranked Hippensteel, however, returned to take the second set 6-4, then won the third 7-5 to capture his 13th straight win and improve to 23-3.

The Cardinal will now play its final five matches of the regular season at the Taube Family Tennis Stadium. The Cardinal begins the homestand on Tuesday, April 10 when it hosts #27 California (10-6, 2-2) at 5:00 p.m. as Cashin Company Realtors presents 'Twilight Tuesday'.
