No. 16 Softball Falls To No. 4 Stanford, 9-4

April 7, 2001

STANFORD, Calif. - The No. 16 ranked Oregon State softball squad dropped its Saturday afternoon contest at No. 4 Stanford, 9-4.

The Beavers fall to 30-14-1 overall and 0-3 in the Pac-10 Conference, while Stanford ups its record to 34-3-1 and 4-1 in conference action.

'This was one of our most intense seven innings of competition,' said OSU head coach Kirk Walker. 'Unfortunately we made a few mistakes, but we played hard all seven innings.

'Stanford swung the bat well, took advantages of our mistakes and got a lot of breaks.'

The Cardinal got on the board with four runs in the first inning. Sarah Beeson walked and Kira Ching singled before Jessica Allister's two-RBI double to left field. Allister would then score when Cassi Brangham reached base on an error. Maureen LeCocq and Jenni Shideler both followed with singles, with Shideler's hit to left scoring Brangham.

The Beavers answered with three runs of their own in the top of the second. Steph Adams led off with a base hit and Shelly Prochaska drew a walk. Back-to-back doubles by Michelle Notaro and leadoff hitter Brooke Rutschman narrowed the Stanford lead to 4-3.

The Cardinal added what proved to be the winning run in the bottom of the second when Alana Mendoza crossed the plate following a double by Ching.

Oregon State added a run in the fourth inning when Clare Burnum's RBI single knocked in Cara Maxey but the Beavers were unable to bring any more runs across the plate.

'We had some clutch performances offensively but need to maintain our timely hitting throughout the game,' commented Walker.

Maxey finished the day a perfect 2-for-2 from the plate while Notaro went 2-for-3 with two RBI and a run scored. Burnum continued her hot hitting with a 2-for-3 one RBI effort from the plate.

Freshman hurler Monica Hoffman suffered the loss to drop her season record to 11-7.

The Beavers and Cardinal return to action Sunday at 1 p.m. for the second game of the weekend series.
